[edit] Background
SummerBash is an annual pay-per-view that had previously been produced every August by WIW since 1999. Dubbed "The Biggest Party of the Summer," it is one of the promotion's original four pay-per-views (PPV), along with SuperBrawl, World War, and Soul Survivor, originally dubbed the "Big Four", and as of August 2021, it is considered one of the "Big Five", along with Money in the Bank. Out of the five, it is considered WIW's second biggest event of the year behind SuperBrawl. The 2022 event will the 25th event in the SummerBash chronology and will feature wrestlers from the Rage and ShowDown brands. Announced in October 2021, the 2022 event will be the very first SummerBash to not be held during the month of August. Instead, it is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Shopko Stadium in Helena, Montana. It will also be the first SummerBash to incorporate a new logo, replacing the previous SummerSlam logo that had been used for the past 12 years.
[edit] Storylines
The event will include matches that result from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portray heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches. Results are predetermined by WIW's writers on the Rage and ShowDown brands, while storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television shows, Wednesday Night Rage and Saturday Night Show, however since the pay-per-view event is on Saturday, ShowDown would be moved to Friday instead of it's original Saturday.
At SuperBrawl XIV in April, WIW World Champion Kevin McAlmond defeated Heavyweight Champion Martin McAlmond, Tyler Mane, and Jordan Singleton in a Fatal four-way Winner Takes All match in controversy. After the controversy of SuperBrawl, Martin McAlmond would continue defending the WIW Heavyweight Championship, while Kevin McAlmond would defend the Undisputed WIW World Heavyweight Championship. On the June 18 episode of ShowDown, Martin McAlmond retained the WIW Heavyweight Championship earlier in the night, while Kevin McAlmond successfully defend the Undisputed WIW World Heavyweight Championship. Martin McAlmond confronted Kevin McAlmond about one more match for the all the titles, Mane then made a surprise return after a two-month hiatus and offered both McAlmond's a handshake. Before either McAlmond could shake his hand, Mane attacked both men and then attacked The McAlmonds (TJ McAlmond and Brad McAlmond), who had come to Martin's aid. It was subsequently announced that Kevin McAlmond would defend the Undisputed WIW World Heavyweight Championship against Mane and Martin McAlmond in a Last Man Standing Elimination match at SummerBash.
On the June 17 episode of SmackDown, after losing to Pat Collins, Eli Eason confronted commentator Jason Neiffer—a former teacher of his in Capital High School who consistently criticized Corbin on-air for his underhanded tactics. The following week, Neiffer challenged Eason to a match at SummerBash. After Money in the Bank went off the air, Eason attacked Eason and subsequently accepted the challenge.
At Money in the Bank, Charlie Hunnam defeated Justin Eldridge to in the WIW United Nations Championship. On the following episode of Rage, Eldridge announced he was granted a rematch against Hunnam for the title at SummerBash. The following week on Rage, Money in the Bank holder Dustin Simpson defeated Eldridge and was later added to the title match at SummerBash.
At Money in the Bank, The McAlmonds (TJ McAlmond and Brad McAlmond) defeated The Street Dohlens (Dawson Dohlen and Coner Dolan), The Starling Arrows (Stephen Amell and David Ramsey) and Wright of Storm (Scott Wright and Harlan Storm) to retain the Undisputed WIW World Tag Team Championship. Following the match, replayed footage of the pinfall showed that Dohlen's shoulder was off the mat, thus the pinfall should not have been counted. A championship rematch was then subsequently scheduled with all teams involved for SummerSlam. On the July 15 episode of ShowDown, WIW official Joe Spieker announced that WIW Hall of Famer Morgan Fraser would be the special guest referee for the match.
At Money in the Bank, Sarah Grobel won the women's Money in the Bank ladder match to earn a women's championship match contract of her choosing. After Sis Bates retained the WIW Heavyweight Women's Championship later that same night, Grobel ran out and used the contract to cash in on Bates and win the title. On the following ShowDown, it was announced that Grobel would defend the title in a rematch against Bates at SummerSlam.
