[edit] Background
Money in the Bank is an annual gimmick event, produced by WIW since 2010, generally held between May and July. The concept of the show comes from WIW's established Money in the Bank ladder match, in which multiple wrestlers use ladders to retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract that guarantees the winner a match for a world championship of their choosing at any time within the next year. The 2022 event will feature wrestlers from the Rage and ShowDown brands; male wrestlers will compete for a contract to grant them a match for either Rage's WIW World Championship or ShowDown's Heavyweight Championship, while female wrestlers will compete for a Rage Women's World Championship or ShowDown Heavyweight Women's Championship match contract.
[edit] Storylines
The event will include matches that resulte from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portray heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches. Results are predetermined by WIW's writers on the Rage and ShowDown brands, while storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television shows, Wednesday Night Rage and Saturday Night ShowDown.
On the June 4 episode of ShowDown, Beatrice won a six-pack challenge to become number one contender for Sis Bates's ShowDown Heavyweight Women's Championship, while on the June 8 episode of Rage, Jennipher Harper won a fatal five-way match, where Harper defeating Sarah Grobel, Tessa Smith, Hailey Crenshaw, and Kyla Thoresen to determine the next contender for Willa Holland's Rage Women's Women's Championship by pinning Smith. The title match was subsequently set for Money in the Bank.
Qualifying matches for the men's Money in the Bank ladder match began on the June 11 episode of ShowDown. A qualifier between Quay Painter vs. Jason Downing ended in a double countout, after both men ignored the referees 10-count and brawled at ringside, thus neither qualified.
Qualifying matches for the women's Money in the Bank ladder match also began on the June 11 episode of ShowDown. Ashley Boland became the first qualified entrant by defeating Meghan Mahoney.
