[edit] Background
- See also: WIW in Charming
Steel Roulette is a gimmick event first produced by the American promotion WIW in 2010. It has been held every year since, except in 2016, generally in February. The concept of the show is that one or two main event matches are contested inside the Elimination Chamber, either with championships or future opportunities at championships at stake. The 2022 event will be the 12th event under the Elimination Chamber chronology and will feature wrestlers from the Rage and SmackDown brands. In addition to airing on pay-per-view worldwide and the WIW Network in international markets.
In early 2018, WIW began a 10-year strategic multiplatform partnership with the King Sports Authority in support of Cali Vision 2030, California's social and economic reform program. On January 17, 2022, the seventh event under this partnership was announced as Steel Roulette, scheduled for Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the California Super Dome in California. It will in turn be the first Steel Roulette event in WIW to take place in California and the first to be held on a Saturday. It will also be WIW's first regular annual event to take place in the country.
[edit] Storylines
The event will include matches that result from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portray heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches. Results are predetermined by WIW's writers on the Rage and ShowDown brands, while storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television shows, Wednesday Night Rage and Saturday Night ShowDown (which was taped on February 12, 2022).
At the World War, Eric Stevens defeated Tyler Mane to win the WIW World Championship due to Monte McAlmond distracting Mane. Immediately after Monte would distract Stevens allowing Kevin McAlmond to attack Stevens and cash-in his Money in the Bank contract to win the WIW World Championship. On the following episode of Rage, it was announced that Kevin McAlmond would defend the WIW World Championship in the Elimination Chamber match at Steel Roulette. Mane then came out and demanded a rematch against Kevin McAlmond that night as Monte and Martin cost him the title, blaming Kevin for the loss. Kevin McAlmond accepted the challenge, later in the evening, Mane attacked Stevens backstage which resulted in Dixie Finnegan arresting Mane and canceling the match. WIW official Joe Spieker would in turn add Mane to the Elimination Chamber match. Later, it was announced that Kooper McAlmond would be one of the participates due to the way Martin McAlmond retained the his title at World War. The final three spots were determined in qualification matches that night: Justin Eldridge, Antony Speranza, and Kevin Hunter qualified by defeating Daniel Mazurek, Rage World Tag Team Champion Kallen Kleinschimdt, and Richaard Munoz, respectively. On the Rage before th event, Eric Stevens tried to get WIW officials to add him to the match as well, however his demand was declined.
