Background

Retaliation is a recurring pay-per-view (PPV) event that was established by WIW in 1999. The event continued annually as the post-SuperBrawl event until 2009, which was the final event until 2016. It was brought back that year following the reintroduction of the brand extension, where WIW again split its roster between the Rage and SmackDown brands where wrestlers are exclusively assigned to perform; the 2016 event also ended its previous tradition of being the post-SuperBrawl pay-per-view. The event then continued annually until 2018 when it was replaced by Stomping Territory the following year, but was reinstated in 2020. but during SuperBrawl XIII, it was revealed that Backlash would be held on May 16—switching dates with that year's Money in the Bank—and would be titled "SuperBrawl Retaliation," thus returning Retaliation to its original role of being the post-SuperBrawl PPV. It will be the 16th event in the Retaliation chronology and feature wrestlers from the Rage and ShowDown brands.

Mad Hanson, Eric Stevens and Brent Huntley then interrupted and stated their respective cases to challenge for the title. WIW official Joe Spieker then came out and scheduled a fatal four way eliminator match between McAlmond, Hanson, Stevens and Huntley with the two winners facing Hunnam for the WIW World Championship at SuperBrawl Retaliation, which was won by McAlmond and Stevens.

At SuperBrawl XIII Saturday, Rona Fessenden defeated Brittany Hiatt, Victoria Lehr, Scout Compton and Ravyn Scott in a Fatal five-way elimination match to earn a future shot at the [[WIW World Women's Championship].
