Desmond Jacob Samael (dez-mon jay-kob sah-male) is a Seventh Year Slytherin at Hogwarts School. He is a character in the RPG Incantatem.

Appearance
Des stands at around six feet, and looks far from dangerous. His whole build is best described as narrow- narrow shoulders, narrow hips, narrow face. It is not in his strength, but in his magical ability, and his charm, that the danger lies.
He has shiny, dark brown hair that falls to his eyes, which he often tries to tuck behind his ears. His eyes are thin and oddly shaped dark brown, and perpetually cold. His mouth is generally curved into a scowl, but when he does smile, it’s oddly crooked- his bottom lip tends to pull to the side, even when he talks.
Desmond is played by Milo Ventimiglia.
Personality
Desmond’s ego is pretty damn big. He has an inflated sense of self-worth that can cause him to cut himself off from others that he deems unworthy. This’ll include muggles, mudbloods, blood traitors, people who are indifferent to the wizarding war and people who don’t hate the aforementioned groups enough. One could try to argue with him that these people have never done anything wrong, it’s not their fault that they were born thy way they were, but Des isn’t likely to listen. In truth, deep down, he doesn’t really have a reason for his hatred. This wizarding war is an opportunity for him to release his sadistic side. Needless to say, he doesn’t really get along with many people. This prejudice is an exercise in extreme hypocrisy, seeing as he is a half-blood, though, after the death of his mother and biological father, he is the only one beside the Dark Lord who knows this. This also means that, although he does think he is all-important…he despises himself, deep down. However, this feeling may have started before the night he found out he was a mudblood.
Desmond isn’t intelligent, only because a truly intelligent man could never hate a group of people for absolutely no good reason. However, one could say he is very knowledgeable, quick-witted, and clever in all other ways. He doesn’t really work too hard when it comes to classes, though, but he does test well.
Perhaps it is his overdeveloped sense of himself that has led to his lack of empathy. Desmond can’t seem to comprehend most human emotions. The few he does get would include hatred, desire, and satisfaction. Pain and fear are weaknesses, in his mind, and inflicting either upon someone doesn’t faze him in the least. Love is an imaginary emotion that people use to sugar coat lust or just plain dependence. Trust is hard to come by, for him, and in him. However, if he trusts you with his life, then you should trust him. If this is the case, then you are his friend, and one of the very few people he would do anything for.
But neither his ego, nor his lack of empathy seem to extinguish his undeniable charm. He can put on a great show, if he needs to, which is often the case at Hogwarts. But that is all it is, a show.
Pre-Incantatem History
Desmond Jacob Samael was born into an old and respected pureblood family. His birth, luckily (or perhaps not so) enough, coincided with the rise of the Dark Lord, whom his parents supported avidly when he was growing up. This environment instilled in him a hatred for all things impure of blood or thought.
His parents were respected Death Eaters, and had instructed him in the ways of Dark Magic since he was old enough to hold a wand, hoping to have him join them in their ranks when he came of age. Des never thought badly of any of his parents’ child rearing, but he respects them far more than he loves them. From the time he was ten, he was repeatedly told that The Dark Lord was keeping an eye on him. Desmond did all he could to impress this mysterious wizard.
Desmond met Voldemort for the first time when he turned sixteen. It was this encounter that granted him the knowledge of his mother’s affair with a muggle, an affair that he was the product of. The Dark Lord presented her to Desmond, weeping and begging for their forgiveness. A rage unlike any other took him over, and before he could think, he whispered those infamous two words and held his wand steadily at his sobbing mother. There was a flash of green light- then silence. The only remorse he felt was for the fact that he couldn’t go back and time and kill her before she could commit the heinous act. It was that night that Desmond became a full fledged Death Eater, and branded with the dark mark. Just under a month later, he was back at Hogwarts.
Plot

Role in Incantatem Plot
Desmond is a pureblood, and was a Death Eater until he was convinced that the cause was lost by his friend, Cillian Rodrigo. Cillian erased Desmond's Dark Mark, symbolizing Desmond shifted alliance. He is now a member of The HUSH.
Minor/Personal Plot
- Desmond has been struggling with self-hatred ever since he murdered his mother and found out the truth about his lineage.
- Desmond recently found out that Cillian has always known about his heritage, and still never deserted him.

- His last name was inspired by a figure in Talmudic lore who is "the accuser, seducer, and destroyer". Samael is sometimes considered to be the true angelic name of Satan.
