This is often seen in the game series Final Fantasy
They go like this Fire->Fira->Firaga->Firagun
They are also opposing eg. Water beats thunder and thunder beats water. Fire beats ice and ice beats fire.
They can heal some elemental alligned monsters.
Their opposite is White Magic
