The Targaryens escaped the Doom of Valyria and settled on Dragonstone. From Dragonstone Aegon I Targaryen, known as the Dragon, with his sisters Visenya and Rhaneys, set sail to conquer and become the first king of the Seven Kingdoms, after he had unified them during the Wars of Conquest.

283 AL The Sack of King's Landing by Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell. Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie and Hand of the King fell ill and died after a short while. Unable to save him, Grand Maester Pycelle gave Jon milk of the poppy to ease the pain. His wife Lysa and son Robert travelled back to the Eyrie.

King Robert decided to travel north with the royal family to see Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell. Ser Jaime Lannister and Tyrion Lannister were among those following the king.
