The alternate fire keeps the barrel "warmed up" so you can fire immediately. A notable difference is in TimeSplitters 1, the gun is smaller and 2 can be held at the same time. On TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, it is much bigger and takes up a bigger proportion of the screen.
