- The arrival of the railroad in 1891 “ushered in the twentieth century for Springfield,” ending its isolation, stimulating economic growth and acting as a catalyst for civic improvements (Graham 1978:3). In that year the Southern Pacific Railroad (Springfield) line was extended from Coburg to Springfield and Natron, which gave the area direct access to commercial markets. At this time the Depot is built.
- Springfield flour becomes famous throughout the northwest.
