Keep following the footprints

"I suppose you're right," says Mike. "If we tried searching, all we'd be doing is stumbling around blindly in the snow. If we keep following the footprints, we'll find an answer to something. Maybe we'll find the soldier too."
The two of you continue to follow the footprints. A couple hundred yards further on, a second set of footprints joins the first.
"What could this mean?" you wonder out loud.
"I don't know, but we'd better keep our guard up," Mike replies. "Keep our backs covered and make sure nothing sneaks up on us. I'll watch the front."
You check behind you every few steps for danger. After the seventh or eighth time, you are just about to look forward again when you see something out of the corner of your eye. You whirl and stare. A man is lying in the snow, and a woman is sitting on top of him. You recognize them from pictures you were shown as John and Bethany, the missing scientists.
Just as you begin opening your mouth to say something, Bethany raises an axe, preparing to smash it into John's skull!
