Bleary-eyed, you walk down the carpeted staircase from the upper floor (where the bedrooms are), down to the kitchen - it's bright, and spacious, a simple modern kitchen facing out toward the backyard window.
As usual, your mother, Anne, is at the bench preparing some sandwiches. As you descend, you take note of her.
