There are no contests on this website.  If there were, grammar and punctuation would count as storytelling elements.  13 years is certainly an improvement over Icarly in that respect, but it could still use some editting, especially with punctuating the dialogue properly and remembering that an elipsis is three periods, not however many you feel like typing. --Platypus 07:08, 23 October 2009 (PDT)

Story Discussions

Can everybody pleasy edit the story, High School please I really want it to go far, so put anything into it

if you want. -Gr1mm 07:18, 9 August 2009 (EDT)

This is a great idea, but the problem is that the story lacks focus. Everyone is just adding to it in crazy directions with some adult content thrown in. Although I guess its funny, it will never be a story. I suggest that the authors try their best to constrain it to the world of the story, and not have things like out of place items like possibly cell phones or celebrities, etc. (I am talking here about the non-adult stories.)

I completely agree, but keep in mind that if you see something that doesn't belong, feel free to cut it out. Also all it takes is one person with the urge to create a focused storyline. Right now everyone is just putting in little peices just for the heck of it.
I agree that story focus will be a problem with the current system (I also agree that this is a great idea). How about writing a short blurb on the beginning page when starting a new story? It could work as a setting definition for that story, and as a reference when editors weigh whether new additions to that story are appropriate or not. It would also work as a traditional book blurb, making it easier for readers to choose stories to their liking. E.p. 11:15, 12 December 2006 (EST)

Whoever put in that story about red october, it was really good! -RobKohr 08:00, 10 August 2006 (EDT)

  • Tip: search for small images and add the links to them to equipment. This way you can use images in the equipment list. Try to use the direct image url and not the google cached copy since that changes frequently.

    • Removing the "Random page" link might be a good idea for this project, especially when children are visiting the site, may curiously or accidentally stumble onto a scene from an 18+ story or something. Leileilol 20:39, 28 November 2006 (EST)

  • I wasn't here when Gaius Flaminus struck, but I went onto the recent changes page and I agree he sounds like a @#%$&. Post on my talk page if you agree. Fruitbat
  • Has anyone tried Crusader or Paladin? They're not as boring as they may sound! Fruitbat
    • Yeah, I have. Crusader started fine but then got too wierd and mixed-up after a while. Paladin is newer, so it's still coming together. I added about 8 pages to Paladin the other day...Ashogo
  • I sort of stopped making then since I though they had enough (though I might start again after a while) and I've been looking on recent changes. Many different users are adding new things. They can be weird, but they aren't misspelled or way off topic, so I let them stay. Fruitbat
    • Oh yeah, they aren't really poorly written or anything, they just don't fit together. (like one second you're fighting off monsters in your castle and suddenly you're in a forest and the castle is never mentioned again)I kinda figured that you didn't write most of the more recent stuff. It's not really bad or anything.Ashogo

Print a text with pagination for the story?

I'm a teacher, I'd like to print some of these for my students. Anyone figured out how to print the stories with pagination for going to the next decision?--Pleabargain 21:03, 24 May 2009 (PDT)

You could try printing the pages and then putting them in alphabetical order by title. --Platypus 11:07, 25 May 2009 (PDT)

Kids only website with same idea?

This site is a great idea but totally not going to fly with any school because of its content. Anyone know of a 'kiddy only' site that does the same thing as this one? Thanks.--Pleabargain 21:03, 24 May 2009 (PDT)

Unfortunately, I think you'll find a lot more adult-only sites out there than kid-friendly sites. We did take the Random Page button off the Main Page precisely because it might land kids in the adult section, but I agree that no school would accept students visiting a site with this much adult content on it. --Platypus 11:10, 25 May 2009 (PDT)

Zoo Template

  • How do you add animal sketches to the zoo templet? I tried to add one and it didn't work. Fruitbat
  • If you mean adding animals to the directory, first, I upload the animal pic I want using the 'Upload File' button. Then I right click on the uploaded file and choose 'properties' from the menu to see how the pic is named here on the site. Then I add a line like this to the ZooTemplate:

|Hyenas. http://www.editthis.info/images/choose_your_own_adventure/a/a9/Striped-hyena_1_sm.gif

I seperate rows of animals by using |- at the start of a new row. Incidentally, I acquired those sketches from http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/mySearch.php --Platypus 00:04, 3 March 2007 (EST)

If you mean adding the sketch to new pages, the template looks like this on a new page: Animal= the name of the animal, animalpic= the address of the picture --Platypus 00:24, 3 March 2007 (EST)

1st Person Stories

  • Do stories have to be set in the second-person perspective? Because I have a story set in first-person that I think might be nice here, but it would be a pain to change everything to second-person. I don't see any rules about it so I'm guessing it's ok...?Ashogo
  • Go ahead. When it comes to writing, don't be afraid to experiment. There's nothing wrong with doing something a little different. Also, Jo-Ann the Librarian is in semi-3rd person. --Platypus 00:04, 3 March 2007 (EST)
  • Yeah my story Zombie OverLord is written in first person and I think its great but thats just because I am the writer... lol. Merlin_a4

Formatting Text

  • How do you add words in bold writing after you make a new page or edit a page? Fruitbat
  • By putting threee quote marks around the text (bold=bold). Two quotes makes italics. Or use the little string of buttons on the top of the edit window. --Platypus 11:25, 25 February 2007 (EST)
  • Thanks for the info, but I was really meaning like this: (blocked "User:66.168.100.13" with an expiry time of infinite: vandal) which appeared on "recent changes" page after RobKhor blocked User 66.168 etc.
  • Oh, that. Write something in the summary box at the bottom of the edit screen and it will appear on the "recent changes" page.--Platypus 07:38, 27 February 2007 (EST)
  • Is there any way to format text so that certain lines are out in the middle (indented) like this:
         E x a m p l e

But without having that blue box around it?

           I don't think so.

You just have to start pages at the beginning of the page I guess.Fruitbat

Princess Carkegee

  • I'm confused about the Kid's adventure, Princess Carkegee. It seems to be about religion, in which not many people would take interest. The plot is mixed up and confusing, and it seems to be focusing on more then one religion at once. The title does not mix into the adventure. The adventure, I think, needs to be changed. User:Fruitbat
    • I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't make heads or tails out of that story. I'm not sure if it's meant to be Buddhist, Christian or what. --Platypus 09:03, 14 February 2007 (EST)
  • Right now, I think I'm going to try to "re-vamp" Carkegee a little...

Fruitbat.

  • I have now added a Princess Carkegee status bar to the adventure. Fruitbat
  • What the...wow, you're right. What is going ON in that story? I really don't get it. Ashogo
  • I did a google search for "princess carkegee". There's more confusing buddhist/christian/hallucination stuff about her floating around out there, but nothing that makes any kind of sense.--Platypus 00:04, 3 March 2007 (EST)

Best wiki ever

  • I admit obviously that I've only flicked through the non-adult sections and have paid the most attention to the Sex Romp story, but still, this is an excellent use of the wiki technology.
  • I'm glad someone likes the site, since every day lately another jerk attacks and I waste a lot of time repairing things. Platypus

  • Why is it that "Smutty Sex Romp" can have the word "sex" when the word "sex" is forbidden?

  • Daang...who did the "World's End" Story? It's incredibly good, now we just need it to be expanded.Ashogo

Page counts

  • The page counts seem wildly off.
  • And how do you figure that? Many stories here have their own status bar. By going to the Special Page 'Most Linked To Pages', you can see precisely how many pages link to a status bar. So the pages counts aren't guesses. They're computed by the site itself. --Platypus 10:22, 9 February 2007 (EST)

Categories

Categories need to be created for each individual story. Makes it easier to group them and keep track of your pages. Also, I've created Category:Templates for all "Status" templates - Kwenn 12:45, 9 February 2007 (EST)

It isn't necessary to categorize every page in a story. Having a status bar unique to that story serves pretty much the same function. But a category for templates is a good idea. --Platypus 13:10, 9 February 2007 (EST)

Not every story needs a status bar, and then categories become useful. On another CYOA story wiki I use, categories are used to track stories, original authors of each thread, and such things as unfinished threads. Seems to work nicely. Makes it easy to see other things an author has written, what threads need work, etc. --Torg 19:54, 2 October 2009 (PDT)

The usefulness of categories has become more obvious as the site has grown. It's very helpful to be able to instantly identify what story any given page belongs to. I've been making certain that every page has a category. --Platypus 21:22, 2 October 2009 (PDT)

I'd like to know more about the "Unfinished thread" and such categories. Do we currently use them here? And how do they help track authors? --Rawar 23:17, 5 October 2009 (PDT)

I use the 'user contributions' function to check what a given author has written. Putting a category of 'unfinished thread' on an incomplete page could be useful for tracking pages in need of completion. But no one has been doing so here. --Platypus 08:00, 6 October 2009 (PDT)

On my own editthis.info Wiki that I use for writing CYOA stories for another site (I was using my own PHPWiki on my own domain, but it was really slow) I add 'Category: Unfinished' to any page that I haven't finished yet. Some of those pages are from other authors (I copied their page from the other site to give my page context), so I add 'Category: author's name', since they didn't write it in the Wiki, but it's their words. --Torg 08:46, 7 October 2009 (PDT)

Sysyop Rights

  • Something starnge just happened to me! I got sysop rights today and now the entire site looks different! I can't find edit buttons in certain places! I woundered if Platypus or anyone else with sysop rights sees the same thing, and also if they know how to get back to the old page or if it's just an effect of the sysop. Fruitbat
  • RobKohr has promoted us, Fruitbat. Now we can block vandals or protect pages, as necessary. I haven't noticed any missing edit buttons... yet.--Platypus 11:25, 25 February 2007 (EST)
  • I understand about the promotion. However, the page is now back to normal. I don't know what happened to the page. All of the edit buttons seemed to dissappear, but they are all back now. Fruitbat
  • What does "protect" do?
    • 'protect' prevents anyone from editting a page. --Platypus 08:45, 28 February 2007 (EST)
  • I wounder what the highest rank we can get is?
  • It appears someone may have beed sort of "vandalizing". on the special page "user list", there are about 20 user names with multiple exlamation points, sort of like C. Mitch's ones. Should I block them? Fruitbat
    • I noticed those. I'm not sure if they mean anything or not. --Platypus 00:04, 3 March 2007 (EST)
  • I went ahead and blocked them. It took a while! Fruitbat
  • When I edit Boromir's Quest, I copy the Status Bar and Category indicator from the previous page. Now two of the pages are listed at the top of the category page and not under their appropirate letter. Can someone explain this to me? Fruitbat
  • On the first page, the category bar reads . The blank space after the | floats the page to the top of the index. If it read , it would alphabetize the page under Z, no matter what the actual page title is. For most pages, it should simply be . With no |, it alphabetizes by itself. --Platypus 17:02, 15 April 2007 (EDT)

Category experiment.

I know we've discussed categories before, and that some people have decided that it's unnecessary to put every page of a story in a category. I disagree, personally, I think that the current method is too unorganized, and when I see a page in recent changes, I can't tell what story it belongs to. So as a compromise, I'm going to start assigning categories to one story (Dead Kid) as a trial. If it works out well, we move on the next story. If it doesn't work out, well, it doesn't work out. (IMO, this plan makes at least as much sense as starting all of the Victim pages with "Victim:"). — LastUserNameEver 11:55, 15 March 2007 (EST)

I disagree. Although I do find it hard to tell what story certain pages go into (especially if no status bar was placed on the page), I don't think that categorys are needed for each story and individual page. Although I don't really mind experimenting, I just don't want you to kill yourself caregorizing every page on the site. Fruitbat

I think having unique status bars for each story works just as well, but I have nothing against experimenting. --Platypus 13:10, 15 March 2007 (EST)

What is going on!? Categories are being placed for each and every story, even for the crumbling Island of Utobi! I don't know why everyone wants to categorize every page! Isn't ten categories enough? Fruitbat

fake link spamming

I have recieved the follwing message whan trying to edit main page: "You have been identified as a link spammer by the use of the word sex.

If you are the admin of this wiki, you can go to the control panel for instructions on how to add this to the white list." the word sex was not even written by me (in fcat I was just changing a 0 into a 5), but part of category descriptions, and if I were to try and delete all instnces of it, that would render one story unreadable. so... um... help?

A1s 17:58, 26 March 2007 (EST)

I used to get a similiar message if I tried to eidt the entire Main Page instead of just a section. It might let me do it now since I got promoted to sysop. --Platypus 18:03, 26 March 2007 (EST)

Oh yeah, that happened to me to. It ticked me off. However, I don't get it anymore (however, I don't think it's sysop, since it stopped before I was premoted). Fruitbat

That just happened to me! After I lost all my writing work trying to save only to have it deleted when that message came up, I went to the Nonspam page, and it was blank! I don't know why it turned blank, but it ticked me off (I restored it back to normal). Fruitbat 22:25, 06 April 2007 (EST)

Secret Island of Utobi

  • I want to know why the people in Secret Island of Utobi do their little 'ritual' of save-edit-save-edit.
  • I'd like to know that, too, but they don't seem to be very communicative. --Platypus 18:32, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

And now, that story is becoming weird. I mean, first you're stranded on a desert island, and the next (if you choose the right path, of course)you come to a telephone booth where someone dropped their wallet. It would be best if the authors kept to the world of the story and didn't go overboard (this is also refering to a user who added pages like 'watch some TV' or 'go to the arcade' in Visiting the Zoo. Fruitbat

Since I don't know the secret of the secret island, I couldn't say if finding a phone booth or a wallet is that strange... but Visiting the Zoo should certainly remain a story about visiting the zoo, and not wander off topic to visit anyplace other than the zoo. --Platypus 14:24, 17 April 2007 (EDT)

The users who are editing the Secret Island are getting on my last nerve! They never seem to read their mail. I even posted a notice telling them to read their mail on a page they were editing, and they ignore it! I've given 68.216.187.39 user his last warning...Fruitbat

If any of you can't stand Utobi, go to Wikipedia and add a list of critisms about the story.

Huh? We aren't objecting to the story. We are asking you, repeatedly, to please stop filling up the Recent Changes page by doing you edit-save-edit-save-edit routine. Use the Preview button and consider what you want the page to contain before saving it. Or better still, create an identity for yourself. As a logged-in user, you'll have the option of marking changes as minor, so they can be hidden on the Recent Changes pages. --Platypus 14:46, 25 April 2007 (EDT)

A Trump Idea

Well I'm bored nowadays and I was wondering if I could make a trump game choose stat thing. I'm gonna make it small with 10 cards and each card only having 4 stats but I thought it would be kinda cool. If I do bother it would probably be Final Fantasy games from 1 - 10 including no FF and year and characters and something else. What do you guys think about this idea? I Lion Heart I

I really don't know what a trump game choose stat thing is, but if you can do it as a Choose Your Own adventure, go right ahead with it. Otherwise, this might not be the appropriate site for it. --Platypus 17:31, 15 May 2007 (EDT)

Crusader

I think there is only 9 pages left to make. I would make them but I need to read the story and choose the right directions so I know the whereabouts and what is happening. I think I've made just under 100 pages (on both my account and my IPs.) I Lion Heart I 16:02, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

I do believe the Crusader story is completely complete. I believe there to be no links in red and I searched through the whole category. Is this the first? --I Lion Heart I 12:47, 8 July 2007 (EDT)

I think so. Congratulations! --Platypus 21:33, 8 July 2007 (EDT)

Shouldn't you just say "337" pages seeming it's definate and will only change if people add more options to a certain place and leave more red links. I'm gonna contribute to Paladin if that's okay. (seeming I haven't seen on [User:Fruitbat|Fruitbat on recently and I'll probably end it before then) I'm babbling on so... --I Lion Heart I 15:05, 9 July 2007 (EDT)

I think the problem was with the crappy computer I was connecting from. I'm uploading it the the wiki's server, which should serve better even when I'm at a cruddy terminal. --Platypus 16:56, 25 June 2007 (EDT)

I've made a few minor adjustments, to make it slightly better (in my opinion, at least)...

cyoalogo2pngtn5.png

I've made the text black, and enlarged the top text slightly. I've also done a few other things, but they're barely noticeable. --Anotherpongo 12:11, 26 June 2007 (EDT)

SSR page-jump

Since ssr (Smutty Sex Romp) is such a HUGE story, I think it might be cool to have a section on it's main page where you can select certain areas in the "story" to go to. There are certain areas that are near impossible to go to once you have to start over, so this could be an optional thing for people who want to find somewhere quickly or start from a certain place. --User:Kazemawari

There are several options for finding specific areas. On the status bar, there's a spot for Location. Click on the location and you'll go to a brief description of it. From this description page, click on the category, which is Smutty Sex Romp Locations. This will take you to the index of all locations in the story. Click on any of them to get the description, and from that page, click on the left where it says 'what links here'. That will give you a list of pages in that location.

This is why it's important to include the status bar on any page you create. --Platypus 20:55, 16 September 2007 (EDT)

I think it's a good idea with some games like world's end though, where there are no list of locations. I added one. Good idea. --Ashogo

Since I'm Still Working on Ideas, Still Incredibly New on Programming, . . .

And I can't be here 24/7, what state should I leave unfinished pages in? I tried reading the rules, but now I can't find them anymore. I'd really like to not get banned. And for for those unfinished stories I add to (that aren't mine), is there a safe "time limit" I ought to adhere to? For instance, if authors come back from vacation/work/life/whatever and have been absent for three months, find I've added to their story in a way they don't like, I'll back off from their story (they have every right to take their stories wherever they see fit, within the rules, anyway). But should I stay away from any in particular?

I guess the safest bet would be just to start my own stories up, which I plan to do . . .

Don't worry too much. I'm the only active member with the power to ban people, and I only ban people for vandalism. I do appreciate it if you finish an individual page once you've started it. That is, it should include options so other writers can carry the story onward if you don't (unless the page is an ending), and should include the status bar/category from the previous page, as appropriate. You can always edit the page's contents later if you feel it needs more work.

The only story I would advise against adding to at this time is Paladin, since it has a rather complex structure and User: I Lion Heart I has been putting a lot into it recently. --Platypus 18:51, 26 March 2008 (EST)

Wow Paladin 2 is big.

Can't create an adventure

For some reason when I try to create an adventure via the create a wiki link, I can't seem to do it. It always tells me there is no wiki by that name and asks me to create one. But when I do, the same thing happens. Any help with this?

You don't click the creat a wiki link to creat your adventure, you click to edit the section you wish, like kids stories, normal stories and that kind of stuff. Then once you edit it you can copy a story link there, and paste it were it goes. Then you change the name of that to your story. After that you click on hit to edit it.

Giant Cookie story

Guys, can somebody have a look at this, there are some things on there that really aren't very nice, especially on a story designed for kids.

Amazing

I am left speechless.
Although it feels like about 2 years, according to a history check it was only last April that I started ¯¿½¯¿½¯¿½¢¯¿½¯¯¿½¿¯¿½½¯¿½¯¯¿½¿¯¿½½The many rooms¯¿½¯¿½¯¿½¢¯¿½¯¯¿½¿¯¿½½¯¿½¯¯¿½¿¯¿½½. I decided to take a look back at this site, and simply couldn¯¿½¯¿½¯¿½¢¯¿½¯¯¿½¿¯¿½½¯¿½¯¯¿½¿¯¿½½t believe what I saw. 1000+ pages? Outstanding. However there seems to be a very large amount of dead ends. All in all, I am VERY happy to see this, I may work on a new project regarding this wiki later ^_^.

Mask man

Deleteting some adventures.

There is alot of adventures which contains only like one or two pages or is simply work in progress, i think that we should consider deleting some of them to make it easier for all of us too find the adventure we are looking for. That is at least what i think.

--FreddeX 11:43, 25 October 2008 (PDT)

I've considered doing that, but every now and then someone comes along and takes a story that's been sitting around going nowhere and turns it into something. That Harry Potter adventurer, for example, had only a few pages for the longest time and then people began adding to it. Rampage had about five barely readable pages until I re-wrote it in proper English and since then many others have added to it.

On the other hand, some of those one- or two-page stories are truly awful and it's hard to imagine anyone ever adding to them. --Platypus 12:43, 25 October 2008 (PDT)

How about we implant a new rule, If a story does not have X amount of pages, it be marked as Under Construction? Mask man 19:50, 27 October 2008 (PDT)

ya sounds good but even if some arnt being worked on we should still keep a few of the good ideas. For example i have strarted working on Zombie blood last week when it only hade 1 page on it.Power8

I think what I'll do is create a Pit of Abandoned Stories page. Any story of less than ten pages which hasn't been touched in over a month gets dropped off the Main Page and into the Pit. Anyone who gets inspired by an abandoned story may freely remove it from the Pit and add to it. --Platypus 10:50, 28 October 2008 (PDT)

Maybe an Idea?

I've been wanting to make a more formal one like these for a while, I've made http://writtenadventures.com in attempt to do so, but you can't add to someone else's adventures. I'm not sure if people more like to add to others' stories, or write their own from start to finish.

Note: If this is considered spam in anyway please delete it immediately, I don't mean it to be at all, just Wiki seems to be a little complicated.

From what I've seen, some people here hate having their stories touched by other people, and some people love to add to stories in progress or start stories that they hope others will add to. We get all types here. --Platypus 16:18, 27 November 2008 (PST)

From the first post of this discussion: "This is a great idea, but the problem is that the story lacks focus. Everyone is just adding to it in crazy directions with some adult content thrown in. Although I guess its funny, it will never be a story."

That's the reason I made it non-editable by everyone, but yeah, I see how some like to see what others would add to their story, I would in some cases. I was thinking about have 1 master adventure editable by everyone, make one long one and not as many short ones, but I'm not sure that's the best idea because some people have different tastes & styles.

Btw adventures in that website are editable & viewable to anyone you give the password to. --O.o 07:16, 28 November 2008 (PST)

main page

whats up with the main page?

The whole wikk seems messed up now. WTF??

Just a vandal attack. He's been blocked and his edits reverted. --Platypus 14:45, 26 January 2009 (PST)

ok then

seeing how many

can you see how many people have visted a story?

The bottom of each page says how many times that page has been accessed. But you can't tell how many different people have accessed it.--Platypus 07:20, 2 February 2009 (PST)

ok tyvm

Sort Order

Perhaps we should sort stories by number of pages rather than alphabetical. It will make it easier for new users to find good stories.

But it would make it impossible for new users to find their own newer stories. And the alphabet never changes, while the number of pages in stories does. The list would keep getting re-ordered and dis-ordered. --Platypus 14:33, 17 February 2009 (PST)

I think an editor's selection might accomplish the same end. Have a section that links to only the "best" stories. Or to the finished ones. I think that'd be a great idea. You could even have a page that you link to from the main page that accomplishes the same thing. --Rawar 12:11, 24 March 2009 (PDT)

Relocation

Have you ever considered moving the wiki? EditThis.info is riddled with problems. Since I organised to move one of my wikis to Wikia (and later moved my other one) everything has been fine. Here, everytime I try to open a page, it takes double, possibly triple as long as much longer than it does everywhere else.

I say Wikia, it's the only good wiki host I know of. Far more reliable, and reacts quicker to problems you may have. There's always WikiaStaff to help. More possible things on Wikia's MediaWiki than here too.

Or is this wiki owned by RobKohr and therefore moving it from EditThis.info isn't an option? I Lion Heart I 08:15, 8 April 2009 (PDT)

RobKohr is the admin for this wiki. I'm only a sysop, and I have that status because RobKohr granted it to me. So I don't think that moving is really an option. EditThis isn't always as reliable as I'd like, but I don't think it's that bad, either.

I do wish we could choose to turn that annoying captcha on or off, though. --Platypus 10:16, 8 April 2009 (PDT)

Captcha is the only thing that has proven effective against link spammers, and so there isn't really any other choice, especially since this wiki is so popular. If it was turned off a link spammer would create an account, and an automatic process would be used to fill the wiki with spam. There are many alternative ways that I could attempt to fight them, but after going through that for a few months, I am not eager to do it again.

Hopefully the speed is a little better now. It takes 4 seconds to load a page when logged in (logged in users don't get the advantage of the cache since your logged in details need to show in the top right).--RobKohr 11:31, 9 June 2009 (PDT)

Extra note - while wikia is faster, it is also dependent on outside funding to stay afloat. Editthis.info has remained slightly cash positive since it's creation and is likely to be around for a much longer time that wikia. ( http://valleywag.gawker.com/5065979/wikia-lays-off-30-percent-of-staff ). Plus their TOS state that obscene content is not allowed on their site, and CYOA has plenty of obscene content. This doesn't go against EDI's TOS. --RobKohr 13:51, 9 June 2009 (PDT)

Link spammers were indeed a problem, but that problem ceased completely once I stopped allowing anonymous users to post. The captcha frequently bombs out, preventing new edits on pages with external links on them. Its existence has become far more annoying than the link spammers. I could revert their pathetic edits and block their IP addresses, but when the captcha bombs repeatedly, there's no way to fight it.--Platypus 12:12, 9 June 2009 (PDT)

I will try to implement a more stable version of captcha. Though link spam has not hit CYOA heavily, it has hit other wikis and every page ends up with the spam. This would be unrecoverable on a wiki as large as CYOA (at least not without reverting the whole database).

I'm the Catholic Church.

I've made a few....changes.
Seriously though, I hope nobody minds that I added a Featured story of the week and Quote of the day section to the Main Page, renamed the age groupings, created some new Categories and basically just did a whole lot of crazy stuff.--Occono 12:24, 28 May 2009 (PDT)

Adding some new categories does help a bit, since the list of stories is ever-growing. And if you really want to to a quote of the week, feel free. But your Featured Story blurb is inaccurate. At 375+ pages, Crusader is longer than average, but not nearly as long as Smutty Sex Romp (almost 8500 pages!) or even The many rooms (1300+ pages) --Platypus 14:26, 28 May 2009 (PDT)

Ah OK. Thanks for the input.--Occono 14:38, 28 May 2009 (PDT)

I like the new look! I think it's a bit more friendly. The featured story part will be neat. It'll make it easier to find the good ones.  :-)--Rawar 10:59, 31 May 2009 (PDT)

Thanks! :) I sort of forgot about this place for a long while, got distracted by important real-life stuff, but I'm back now and I'll try and set up a nominations system for the Featured Story like I intended to.--Occono 12:06, 29 June 2009 (PDT)

I'd like to that you for using a line from my story "Another Pointless Story" as the Featured Quote. --jeffthedork 21:29, 24 August 2009 (PDT)

You're welcome! :)--Occono 12:43, 13 September 2009 (PDT)

Category by Ratings

rather than having all the stories listed directly on the main page, wouldn't it be easier to move the stories to separate pages listed by their ratings? For instance having a page that leads to the all ages stories, another page that leads to the adult stuff, etc etc. It would make the main page itself a lot easier and also help keep kids from stumbling across story titles that aren't exactly kid friendly. Oddball 13:50, 31 August 2009 (PDT)

It's an idea I've considered, but so many people seem to find adding a new story difficult as is. I'm afraid of complicating matters any further. Any other opinions? --Platypus 14:11, 31 August 2009 (PDT)

Personally, I don't see how it would be any harder. All it would mean was that you'd be adding a story to one page instead of the other. Oddball 14:48, 31 August 2009 (PDT)

Have you seen how many ways people have managed to goof it up as it is? --Platypus 17:34, 31 August 2009 (PDT)

Nominations

I have nominated Harry Potter as featured story, since nearly a month has passed since Evolution was nominated. I also added a past nominations page to track which stories have been nominated. I *think* Red October came before Evolution, so I added it to that page. On the past nominations page, I also added a line to suggest that at least a week go by before a new story is nominated. Given that nominations have been infrequent so far, I don't think it'll be an issue, but hey. If someone decides to set up a more formal system (or tweak what I've implemented), that's okay with me, but I figured that we should have something a bit more organized for now. --Rawar 14:48, 8 October 2009 (PDT)

Tips for better writing

  • When it comes to the order of choices, it only makes sense that more immediate, instinctual, reaction kinds of choices go toward the top, passive, fleeing choices go at the bottom, and anything else (ie: choices with more thought behind them) ordered into something of a spectrum between (quick, aggressive near the top, to slow, submissive near the bottom). NightChime 01:05, 19 October 2009 (PDT)
  • Irony RARELY needs to be pointed out. If it's really ironic, the reader can figure that out, and they get to feel good about themselves if you don't blatantly tell them to recognize the situation as ironic. IE: Ironically, I'm not following my advice! This mindset of trusting the reader to use his/her brain is often a good idea in a broader sense when writing. For example, instead of saying "With autumn on the leave, winter was coming" (known author Terry Goodkind wrote that almost word for word in one of his books), which in itself is just stupidly redundant, you can say something like "The trees have shed most of their orange leaves." -NightChime 13:51, 19 October 2009 (PDT)

"New stories" section

Just an idea, but maybe there should be a section on the main page for "new stories", for people who like to help new starts get off the ground. Or "new members." It could replace or be in addition to its age group listing. "New stories" could have requirements, like under 30 pages, and started less than two months ago, and "New members" likewise. Though, basing eligibility on amount of content, and "kicking out" for having too much seems a little counterproductive; someone might hold back for a while just so they get more attention as a "new member?" However, time constraints alone wouldn't have that affect, and that way less-prolific writers don't have this almost "noob" label hovering over their head just because they don't log in as often. Any thoughts? -NightChime 14:17, 19 October 2009 (PDT)

It's an idea worth considering, but moving things out of the 'new' category will end up being yet another job for me, the one lonely sysop. As it is, I've had to give up on some of the writers who refuse to even try using anything resembling English grammar and I spend too much time adding categories and undoing story crosses for those who can't be bothered. --Platypus 15:42, 19 October 2009 (PDT)

After I "settle in", if I hit a "plateau" of activity, then I'd be willing to take the responsibility. When an author puts their story up, if they include the starting date it would be a lot easier to determine the expiration date. Of course, they would be in chronological order, so nobody could really be up for "too long," and there'd be no easy way to "trick the system." Not trying to change your mind, just brainstorming a little more. -NightChime 03:51, 20 October 2009 (PDT)

Could be interesting. There are a lot of "new stories", though. I'm afraid that half of the stories here might fall into the under 30 pages criterium. Dating the creation of a story might be a good idea, though. Then we'd know when to throw them into the "Pit of abandoned stories".

How would a new member's section be useful? Few of the members really contribute to discussions or seem to want to do more than edit their stories. I think more cross-person interaction would be a good thing, though. I've never felt like a noob here, just like no one wants to talk to me.  ;-)

Slightly off topic.--- Platypus: regarding the category adding, it might be worthwhile to put a link to a tutorial on wiki syntax on the main page or something. When I started, I pretty much just copied the main page template and hoped for the best. I know what I'm doing better now, but it might be helpful for people who're just starting. --Rawar 10:36, 21 October 2009 (PDT)

There's some information under the 'Help' section, but maybe someone should add more. And make it more obvious that the link is there. --Platypus 10:44, 21 October 2009 (PDT)

  • Alrighty. I can take that on. --Rawar 10:51, 21 October 2009 (PDT)

Off-site CYOA

MS Paint Adventures - [3]

Various humorous antics presented in a style something of a mix of CYOA and text-based computer adventures. While there aren't actually multiple choices for where the adventure leads (with a few exceptions), visitors can leave suggestions for what the next action should be, and the result is often hilarity. -NightChime 16:31, 19 October 2009 (PDT)

Just wondering

Hey, I was just wondering. Are there any contests on this website that host the best CYOA's? If so, I'd like to enter my 13 years story in a contest to do with best storytelling. Is that possible?--Blablob 05:10, 23 October 2009 (PDT)
