Kusanagi Kyo

Kyo Kusanagi [草薙 京 Kusanagi Kyo] is the heir to the Kusanagi Clan and weilder of the Kusanagi Flames from SNK's King of Fighters. He was first introduced in 1994.

History
Pre-Pugatory
Kyo's father, Saisyu, had been training him from a young age to be the keeper of the Kusanagi Flame. Kyo grew up pretty spoiled, in the sense that he really had nothing to worry about, as the Orochi hadn't made a move in centuries. Because of this, Kyo led a relatively normal lifestyle, though he constantly slacked off on his school work, disliking the effort he had to put into it.
Kyo discovered an advertisement for the King of Fighters Tournament when he was still in high school. He went up against, and beat rather soundly, Benimaru and Goro, becoming the leader of the Japan team, and making friends with the other two men in the process. They eventually reached the finals, where they met the man responsible for the tournament, Rugal Berstein. Rugal revealed that the whole reason for the tournament was merely to provide him with worthy fighters, and showed off his collection of petrified fighters that had failed to beat him. During their battle, which hadn't been going well, Kyo noticed the petrified body of his father, and used his rage to turn the tide of the battle, defeating him. Rugal's last move was to set the self-destruct mechanism of his ship, and while they were fleeing, the Japan Team noticed that Saisyu's statue was missing. Rugal showed up in the next tournament, attempting to use a brainwashed Saisyu against his son, but Benimaru and Goro spared Kyo from that fate, and subdued Saisyu instead. Kyo once again fought Rugal, who was drawing power from the Orochi. However, he drew too much, and it killed him.
Kyo was challanged by Goenitz soon before the 96 King of Fighters tournament, and Kyo was naturally cocky and over-confident, which lead to his rather sound defeat. His anger at losing caused him to train to change his usual style from his normal ground fireball attack, to more melee-based flame attacks. He entered the tournament with Team Japan to seek revenge against Goenitz. It was this tournament that led Kyo to meet Chizuru, who warned Kyo about the growing power of the Orochi. Kyo also met, and with the help of Iori, bested Goenitz. After this tournament, Kyo met Shingo, and ended up reluctantly agreeing to take him on as a student. His annoyance was mostly fueled by the fact that at this time, he began having rather vivid nightmares of a strange man defeating him. Though he was wary, he ended up entering the tournament anyway, and encountered, for the first time, The Riot of Blood, which induced the incredible strength of the Orochi, coupled with uncontrollable madness. Because of this, the 'New Face Team', a team of three members of the Orochi who could use their powers at will, managed to ressurect the Orochi. However, Chizuru, Kyo and Iori were able to stop the beast, despite Iori's being induced into the Riot of Blood. Chizuru was able to re-seal the beast, and Kyo passed out from exhaustion.
It was after this that Kyo was taken by NESTS, and his DNA made to create various clones: Kusanagi, Kyo-1, Kyo-2, K' and K9999. He awoke during his incarceration in the NESTS cartel, and fled, once again entering the King of Fighters tournament for revenge, finally making his way to see his friends and two unknown young men fighting a man named Krizalid. The fight soon turned in their favor when Kyo entered the battle, and as the base crumbled around him, Kyo swore revenge on the NESTS cartel. One year went by, and Kyo discovered that NESTS was operating in a city called Southtown, but his efforts were waylaid by Iori, who confronted him in the city. Another year passed, and he joined the NESTS sponsered King of Fighters tournament with Benimaru, Goro and Shingo. With K' and Iori's help, Kyo defeated the leader of NESTS, and once again fled when his opponent set his spaceship on a collision course with Earth.
In 2003, another tournament was announced, and though he vehemently protested Chizuru's urgings at first, due to the fact she wanted him to work with Iori, of all people, he finally relented, and joined a team with Chizuru and Iori. While they managed to defeat Mukai, their victory was short lived, as Ash Crimson soon appeared, stealing Chizuru's Sacred Mirror, and leaving them with the warning that he'd be after Iori next. Kyo swore vengance (as he always does), but was unable to go through with it, as it was at that time that he was called to Purgatory.
Purgatory
Kyo's first memory of Purgatory is waking up on the beach, and wandering into town where he would run into Iori Yagami, and be the instigator of rekindling their blood-feud. They ended up destroying most of the downtown area in their subsequent battle, setting most buidlings and the like on fire as their battle was waged across the streets. They were stopped by a police officer and subsequently thrown in a detainment cell overnight, where they caused a little bit more destruction.
They were released the following day, and Kyo took pity on Iori, and invited (read: forced) him to come and share a hotel room with him so that the older man wouldn't have to sleep on the streets. This would be the catalyst for their further relationship, and the two now share an apartment with Shingo Yabuki and Chizuru Kagura. Before this happened, however, Kyo was sent back in time by Frank the Rabbit to Iori's childhood, where Kyo rescued Iori from a violent beatdown by the child's father. He told the child to wait for him, and that he would save Iori from his curse, before being dragged back to the present. This, too, would bring about another side to their relationship. Kyo brags about his sexual relationship with Iori on the network, but hopes no one takes him seriously; he is, of course, very wrong, and now most, if not all, of the island knows about his relationship with Iori. Recently, I-no guilt-tripped Kyo into re-assessing his feelings for Iori, though the outcome of this remains to be seen.
