Issel Dul Nyan

From Zok

A gifted young monk and servant of Dezzik as the Burning Hammer, Issel was destined for power if he didn't fall in battle first, possibly as the leader of a new monastery. He was famed for his ruthlessness and his penchant for crippling his enemies to watch them suffer before killing them. He'd even drawn the eye of the Dezdrin, who were considering grooming him to marry into tribal nobility if he succeeded in his campaign against the Yuan-ti constructing a temple in the deep desert.

He didn't. The Yuan-ti outmaneuvered his forces and Issel's warriors broke and fled. They were hunted down and sacrificed to Krin Nalgi, and Issel escaped into the desert. He managed to survive for almost a week, but eventually the sun and thirst dealt him a second defeat. Issel was rescued by a passing hermit, and awoke in a cool cave. The hermit nursed him back to health, but refused to say where they were or who he was. Unable to obtain answers or find his way out of the caves, Issel attacked his savior and was surprised when the old man soundly humiliated him. The goblin acknowledged the hermit's strength and convinced him to offer tutelage, gradually learning the path the old man followed until he died six decades later. The old man (Nyan in disguise) was impressed, and brought him back from the Plains of Glass to continue his service. Issel swore eternal fealty to Nyan, and was granted divinity and dominion over the swath of desert where he'd been rescued, which is now Shadow Lake. He lives there still, dimming the sun and allowing water to course forth from the earth to nourish lush plants and passing caravans.
