It is said that after the gods had built the world, and filled it with the things they desired of a world, they were so exhausted from the effort of building it and fighting each other over its contents that they all fell into a deep sleep, save only Zokthis, who had sat back and smiled while his children continued the labor of his creation. He wandered among them, peering into their sleeping minds, and he took a little of each of them and molded it, and he created Dream. And with Dream came the Dreamer, springing to life from the combined hopes and fears and ambitions of the gods, built of the stuff of their dreams. Zokthis named her Subri, and charged her with ruling over the lands where the spirit dwells while the mind is resting,and her younger sister with ruling over the lands the spirit flees from, even in sleep.
Subri is a mysterious goddess, prone to appearing in visions to her followers only to forget what she was going to tell them and play them a song instead. She has total power over the stuff of dreams, and in the land of Dream her will can best that of the other gods as easily as the other gods might best a mortal sorcerer (save only Kiana, whose rule over Nightmare is unquestioned). Outside of her domain, she does not exist. Her power is hated by Dezzik and coveted by Hirzek, and Rin fell in love with her and strives to find a way to bring her into the waking world with him when he leaves her kingdom.
The Dreamer is the patron of all those who dream, and of all that they dream. In her Aspect as the Great Stair (so named for the silver stairs of the tower where she sleeps eternally), she whispers hidden truths into sleeping minds (or hidden lies), things which might change the world if the objects of her lessons didn't forget them upon awakening. As the Great Stair, she is often consulted by shamans and mystics and prophets who wish to glimpse the unknown wonders of her inner kingdom: a land made out of the thoughts of every creature in existence.
