Flower lamps need a good, long, winters rest. Like many people we know, if they awaken before they're fully rested they get sort of cranky, and then they dont bloom well at all.
Actually what goes on is throughout a mild cold weather, the earth stays too warm and the lights begin to come out of dormancy early. They begin to grow, and they're at the mercy of freezing if the temperatures drop back off below freezing, after the ideas appear above the land line. And thats often what happens. Following the lamps have appeared, they freeze and then dont bloom at all, or if they do its a really sad show.

A 3-4 layer of compost also serves as an insulator. The soil will be kept by it from freezing for as you dont want the lamps going through a series of short cycles of freezing and thawing a while, which can be good. Then when the temperatures fall below freezing and stay there for a while, the land does eventually freeze. Then the mulch is proven to work backwards and keeps the soil from thawing out too early. Keeping it in a frozen state is really good as the lights remain dormant for a longer period of time.
It's spring time when they finally do wake up, and ideally by the time they emerge from the bottom the chance of a hard freeze is past and they'll perhaps not be damaged. If they can be kept by you from freezing, they will flower beautifully. When they are done flowering the additional organic matter will assist you to feed the lights, and the cycle begins yet again.
We also grow annual flowers in exactly the same beds with your spring bulbs. By the time the danger of frost is past and its time to place the annuals, the top of the lights have died straight back and are ready to be removed. The mulch that's added in the fall also helps you to feed the annual flowers, as well as enhance the land forever.
