Kay grew up in the Bronx with her father, Bruce, her mother, Angie, died in a hit and run when Kay was four years old. Coming from a motherless home, she was often picked on and beaten up while she grew up. At the age of thirteen, after running away from a group of boys who'd been threatening her, she found herself lost in an alleyway. She was so frustrated and angry and upset she started beating on the walls, kicking whatever she could find. When she finally broke down, she started tearing at her skin, tearing herself down. Only to find she didn't bleed, in fact, she had a brand new layer of skin under the last layer. She tore off every last piece of skin from the top layer and was amazed.
From that day forward, she held herself a little differently, she never showed anyone her power but she did practice it. She learned how to focus and her new layer of skin could take the form of other substances. Wood. Steel. Acid. Diamond. If she'd been in contact with it, she could take it's form.
At sixteen, she showed her father her power. At first, he was afraid, then he came to understand that his daughter had a gift. He helped her train and hone her ability. When she finished high school, she went into the police force, just like her daddy. Kay is now 22 and living in New York City (she has a small apartment above Joe's Pizza), working as a police officer.

Having been raised by her father, a hardened NYPD detective, she obviously wasn't brought up as a girl. Kay smokes, swears, fights and talks with her mouth full. She goes out with her partner after her shifts and throws back a few beers. She's possibly asexual, showing no interest for either sex. She lacks tact and doesn't know when to shut up.

Can tear her skin off and have a new layer in a new form underneath. For example, she can shed her skin and the new layer could be anything from diamond to acid.
