- How to change the default interface language $wgLanguageCode of a new wiki? I created a new wiki, but i can only change the personal language settings for individual users. I want to create a wiki with a default interface in russian, but here is only english. When creating a new wiki using addWiki.php, there is only one option - the name of the wiki. But i can’t configure the default language. Lllkstlll 11:46, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Abandoned dead wikifarm ?
Hi.
The Google News group seems abandoned, I've posted, but no answer, and no validation of my message to be shown. The image upload is disabled on my wiki. And the bug wiki, where to report a bug, and the site where to request a feature, are all dead links. Is this wiki dead? That's horrible if it's dead!
Please, if anyone read this, let me an answer here! (november 2018)
Not dead
Not dead, just lightly maintained as this site makes no money.
If you can, upgrade the MediaWiki version to 1.33.0 (latest version) as MediaWiki 1.15.1 (r10) is really old.
- Thank you for your reply, and sorry for the late reply. That's a pity, because it's a good site, but if there's no assistance or forum, it's hard to get new users. And the admin should make a protection against spam, as it seems there are a bunch a spamming edit there. There should be way to make money with this site, that's a pity! I wasn't sure that this site was maintained any more! So, who maintain it? And could I help in any way?

- An upgrade would be pretty major at this time. I wonder if everything would transition nicely. I am considering it. First though, I am working on monitizing the site better and looking into ads. If it starts making some money I will invest some time in upgrading to the newest version --RobKohr 14:45, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, but all the ads are just about promoting Amazon and nothing else. Also, when you upgrade MediaWiki, don't forget to take backups and change the PHP version to PHP 7.3 (the latest PHP version), otherwise you will get a MediaWiki internal error because PHP 5.2 (what this site uses) is obviously incompatible with latest MediaWiki. Yeah, the software on this wiki farm definitely needs to be updated; its 10+ years old at this point, and several of the features in the newest version would be incredibly useful. Plus, the website keeps shutting down for a few minutes every few hours, and that's really getting annoying. If there's a time for an update, it's now. The datedness of the website is part of why editthis.info doesn't see nearly as much use as it did several years ago. With ads on here, this site can make some money, but it needs some love and care to get it to the point where more people are coming here regularly.
Just sitting back and only watching it infrequently isn't gonna cut it. You have to take a more active approach to maintain the website in your spare time, else it will just rot and die. Also, wiki admins and bureaucrats on here need a more reliable way of contacting you... although if you were more active, it wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem. --Durzan 16:34, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
And I hope Rob upgrades it regularly. MediaWiki security is one of the most important things to consider when maintaining a MediaWiki wikifarm. From the MediaWiki website "Do not install MediaWiki unless you intend to keep up with security upgrades." And about the shutdowns, it means there may be one or more server misconfiguration(s) that is taking the web server offline. It's up to Rob to get us out of 2009. Banana 00:45, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
- I have been looking for ad-free wiki hosting for so long. if an advertisement appears here, I will delete everything and leave. advertising is a cancer of consciousness Lllkstlll 12:13, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Suggestion
Add a file upload feature so you can upload a wiki logo instead of using a URL, which can be used for grabbing IPs, unlike local logo uploads.
- Yep, I had uploads long ago, but with close to a million wikis on here, disk space usage and bandwidth would be too much of a cost and a headache to deal with. You can easily upload images to other services and imbed them in your wiki --RobKohr 14:43, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
Fixing External links
The captcha that appears when someone posts an external link doesn't work. Banana 22:34, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
This. And also, 75% of the special pages does not work because "the following data is cached and may not be completely up to date", is there any way you could fix it? Less important, the {{NUMBEROFACTIVEUSERS}} template is broke, I highly doubt there are 317 active users out there. --Nutshinou Talk! 00:07, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Platypus needs some additional help...
Greetings to RobKohr, Nice to meet you!
To sumarize the concerns of myself, Platypus, and other active users of CYOS, the Admins/systops for Create Your Own Story is significantly understaffed. Of the 5 Admins/systops (not including yourself) most of them are inactive or are unused accounts, and the ones that are active don't have sufficient time or power to effectively do their job of efficiently dealing with vandals, rule-breakers, rule-breaking pages/stories, and other such issues. CYOS has over 100k Articles, and only 2 active systops, only one of which is regularly and consistently active. As it stands, we'd be screwed if another massive group of vandals. Plus, the inactive sysops are a potential security hazard should they get hacked or have their password discovered.
To help deal with this situation, I have provided a brief analysis of the currently listed
Inactive systops:
Admin: a generic account used as the first systop user for every editthis wiki, this account hardly counts as its own individual person and probably doesn't get used after its used to create another user within the usergroup of Beauracrat. Its only purpose at the moment would seem to be a de facto emergency button for the wiki's original creator, which correct me if I'm wrong, would actually be the original user behind Thomas Strohmann based on what I can gather from the public logs of the CYOS wiki.
Thomas Strohmann: an account that appears to have been created near the very start of CYOS. Is the only one besides you and the Admin account that has the user group ofBureaucrat, making him one of the few people that can promote and demote other users, create custom user groups, etc. Probably the original creator of CYOS. Went inactive a long time ago; in his absence, CYOS effectively has no real and official "Head Guy" apart from you. But since you run the entire website and not just the wiki, you have other concerns to worry about. As such, this account is a potential security hazard should someone get ahold of the password, as very few people would notice if someone logged in as a practically long forgotten user. At the very least, this account should be reduced to the status of a regular user. If the original owner shows up again, it wouldn't take too much effort for another sysop with access to promotion to bring him back up to the rank of Bureaucrat and Admin.
Fruitbat: Was given the group of Administrator at the same time as Platypus, but went completely inactive around 12 years ago. His account should probably be switched back to an auto-confirmed user to avoid the same kinds of dangers as the Thomas Strohmann account. If he comes back, an active user with the rank of Bureaucrat can promote him back.
Active systops:
Platypus: The most active and consistent of the Admins, Plat has the most experience of the systops and has been effectively running CYOS for years. From what I can tell, he is hard working, trustworthy, and by all accounts is basically the de facto Manager/Steward/CEO of your most popular wiki. I think its time for him to recognize him for that. He would make a capable "Head Guy" for CYOS; he just needs the rank the authority to back it up.
Bunni: A newer admin in comparison to Platypus, Bunni apparently has a hectic schedule that makes it hard for her (gonna go with her, cause Bunni sounds like a feminine username to me) to login regularly. Nevertheless, she will regularly respond to emails (or so I've heard) and occasionally pop on to read a few stories. Recently, Bunni has vowed to up her game when it comes to activity on CYOS, but it remains to be seen how this goal will manifest.
What needs to be done
1. CYOA needs some more sysops/admins to help deal with the potential influx of additional vandals, and to speed up the cleaning up process of CYOS. Platypus and Bunni have done what they can as admins, but they are stretched too thin. I would suggest finding 3 to 5 trustworthy users on CYOA to be selected as candidates for the rank of Admin.
2. We need at least one active sysop to be given the rank of Bureaucrat so that the wiki can promote and demote other staff members according to our own needs without having to rely soley on you for assistance. I hate to bring this up, but you apparently have been very difficult to contact over these past few years. No doubt you are willing to do all in your power to help those who use the website and wikifarm that you so graciously manage, but it makes some things hard to deal with. We don't have many admins, and cannot fill the holes in their ranks without talking to you. But since you are hard to contact, it means we cannot have these necessary positions filled.
To address this, I suggest that at least one (possibly two) regularly active and trustworthy admins (new or old) should be considered for being promoted to Bureaucrat. Platypus already effectively runs and administrates the day to day affairs of CYOS, as such he should be officially named the new manager of CYOS in your stead (as you run the entire website, not just one wiki that is effectively a subdomain to it), and granted the rank of Bureaucrat. He is experienced, trustworthy, and has done this job for years. If anyone deserves it, it is him.
3. The older admins that have been completely inactive on CYOS for years should probably be retired, as their accounts are a potential weak point for hackers and vandals.
4. As an active member of CYOS and an aspiring fiction Author, I humbly offer myself up as a potential candidate for the rank of admin (or a lower custom user group if you'd prefer). I have a year's worth of experience and still counting as a forum moderator, and I have experience as a volunteer moderator for Crunchyroll.
I have made some significant contributions to CYOS over the past few months, including redesigning and tidying up the front page; organizing and reorganizing categories, templates and story indexes; suggesting and implementing rules and guidelines for dealing with longer stories that have been abandoned by their original author(s); trying to edit and tidy up pages and their organization; numerous spelling and grammar corrections made when I spot them; editing pages so that they adhere to the rules and standards you yourself established and reporting stories if they are too big/troublesome for one or more regular authors to handle alone; voicing my concerns and the concerns of others to you and/or Platypus (as I did in this message); and in general trying to spark interest in working to revive and revitalize the site. I would do a bit more, but alas this is the limit of my abilities as a regular user.
I am totally up for cracking down on vandals.
I thank you for considering what I had to say, and I look forward to working with you in the future.
Sincerely, --Durzan 09:39, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Since you added ads you removed our ability to move pages
I don't see any reason why should page moving not be allowed. I would like to be able to move pages again. --Nutshinou Talk! 14:30, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
Getting administrator on this wiki
How do I manage to do that? I believe I am trustworthy enough to be administrator and I would like to be one. --Nutshinou Talk! 15:36, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
Update the wiki
You add a Godot Asset Store to the other sites, yet you don't care about this site enough to update your MediaWiki installation. Jump off a cliff! 20:50, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- I love how back in 2006 he wanted to upgrade the MediaWiki installation but now he just barely gives a fuck, and that "if it starts making some money I will invest some time in upgrading to the newest version". --Nutshinou Talk! 15:29, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
