From EditThis.info

Hi, I am the admin for this wiki hosting service. Feel free to write me here. Keep in mind, I only pop on and read this every few months, but it is still a good place for discussions about sitewide policy issues.

I don't manage the individual wikis, except to remove legally questionable content when it is reported to me. It is best to contact the admins for the individual wikis themselves.

Restructuring and upgrading

The service is going through an upgrade right now, and temporarily https has been removed. There will be also intermittent downtime and wiki loading issues. Hopefully it will lead to a faster more stable service.

Fixed issue with bans on ip blocking all users from creating

Added a reverse proxy, and the ip looked like it was coming from the proxy, so everyone got blocked. Now passing along user's real ip address, and all works now.

Issue with creating new accounts

Hello. I was trying to create an account on the CYOS wiki, but it never works. I fill in the form and the captcha, but it always gives me the same error message: Could not open socket in ./common/recaptcha/recaptchalib.php. I tried in various other wikis - including the main site - and it still happened. I'm sure you're aware and I know that others are too, but I just wanted to say something in case you didn't. Thank you.

Give it another try. I just fixed the recaptcha library. --RobKohr 15:23, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Upgrading EditThis.info

(After several failed attempts, I finally managed to create an account here.) Hello, I'm Tali64^2, a user on many wikis. I wanted to discuss the possibility of upgrading EditThis.info. This is because it's running on MediaWiki 1.15, which received its last release in 2010, over 12 years ago. This has lead to a massive spam problem and users being able to use administrator tools without them actually being an administrator. So far, I haven't seen anyone misuse the admin tools, but this is a major issue, as someone could theoretically abuse them (such as mass-deleting pages and mass-blocking users).

The current version of MediaWiki is 1.39, so that's the version that EditThis.info should upgrade to. However, 1.39 doesn't support upgrading from a version this old, so here's what needs to be done (I'm assuming you know how to upgrade MediaWiki):

  1. Get familiar with the new features that all the versions between 1.15 and 1.39 brought. There's several UI improvements, bundled extensions that add features that will improve the MediaWiki experience (such as helping combat spam, improve ease of editing, etc.) and even several new skins!
  2. Update PHP to at least 7.4.3 (later version recommended), as this is the earliest PHP version that 1.39 supports. The current version on EditThis.info (5.2.4) is way too old to work with 1.39, so this needs to be done if an upgrade has any chance of succeeding. I don't actually know if SQLite needs to be updated, but I'd update it just in case. Scratch that, you'll also need to upgrade SQLite to 3.8.0 or later, as the current version on EditThis.info (3.4.2) isn't compatible with 1.39.
  3. Make an announcement stating that EditThis.info will upgrade to a newer MediaWiki version. The wording is up to you, and there's no specific date that this needs to be done at, but the sooner, the better.
  4. Because 1.39 will not support an upgrade from 1.15, upgrade to 1.35 first (1.35 is the last version that will support an upgrade from old versions like 1.15). Once you've made sure that nothing is broken, then upgrade to 1.39.
  5. Once you've upgraded to 1.39, continue upgrading when possible! 1.39 is a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, so at the minimum, upgrade every LTS release (the next ones will be 1.43, 1.47, etc.) Upgrading more frequently isn't necessary, but welcome!

More information on 1.39 can be found on MediaWiki's official website (mediawiki.org; sorry I couldn't post a link here, the spam captcha caught me) Of course, this is just a suggestion, and if you have a good reason to keep EditThis.info on 1.15, then it can stay on 1.15. Uh, question

Is there any global moderation for this site? Money12123 01:03, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Also, is it a global thing that external links are banned? Because they shouldn't be, they are important. Money12123 01:15, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
External links are banned? Well that ruins my plans. Pacsonic9000 07:59, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
Well, if the "External link blocked" error pops up, you can refresh the page and click "Submit" to save them. But if a captcha appears, there's nothing that can be done. If that happens, an administrator might be able to enable the saving of links by setting "savelink" in the Control Panel to true for everyone. Also, I don't think there is any global moderation. So?

I don't think there is. Also, RobKohr appears to be inactive, only contributing one or two times every few months. Tali64^2 01:04, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
