- The US is officially in recession, after two consecutive quarters of negative growth
- Sources indicate that the *Connecticut* may have been destroyed by a Russian attack. The Pentagon denies the attack theory, and is still investigating.
- The Republican Party nominates Governor David Gamble of the Mid-Atlantic to be their candidate for President, after the withdrawl of Vice President Andrew Merrilin, with National Security Advisor John Dunn of Illinois as his running mate.
- The Democratic Party nominates Governor Whitney Mason of Appalachia as their standard bearer. Senator Drew Brockmeier of the Great Lakes is nominated for Vice President.
- Gas prices briefly surged above $20 per gallon in the Sunbelt after a disasterous attempt at capping the price of fuel. They have since returned to single digits after the law was repealed.
