John Sidney McCain III (August 29, 1936 - December 7, 2008) was an American politician who died shortly after being elected President in November 2008, but before actually becoming President. He had previously served in the Senate, House of Representatives and Navy and also made an unsuccessful run for the Republican nomination for President in 2000.

Real life and USGovSim canon

John McCain's history is the same as his real life history up until January 1, 2007. Check the actual Wikipedia article for that. This article will only deal with McCain after that date.

2008 presidential election

Main article: United States presidential election, 2008

Candidates

After losing the 2000 Republican Primaries to eventual President George W Bush, McCain made a successful run in 2008. He picked Pennsylvania Republican Elizabeth Warren to be his running mate. The Democratic Party picked Hillary Clinton as their nominee and she in turn tapped Barrack Obama to be her running mate.

Results

McCain edged out a close victory against Clinton, winning the states of New Hampshire and Oregon, but losing Florida [1]. Clinton conceded to McCain at 3AM on the morning of November 5th.

Death

On December 7, 2008, just over a month after his victory in the general election, McCain suffered a heart failure and died [2]. As he technically had not yet been elected President by the electoral college, Warren was instead selected by the college to be the next President [3]. This also allowed the electoral college to immediately elect her choice for Vice President, Aaron Reid, rather than require Reid to go through a Congressional approval process.

This gives McCain the dubious honor of being the only person in US history to win a majority in the electoral college, but not actually be elected President by it.
