The United States presidential election of 2008, occured on November 8, 2008, was the 55th consecutive quadrennial election for president and vice president of the United States. The election coincided with the 2008 Senate elections, House of Representatives elections], and gubernatorial elections, as well as many regional and local elections.
The Republican ticket, formed by the Senator John McCain of Arizona & Governor Elizabeth Warren, of Pennsylvania, defeated Senator Hillary Clinton of New York and her running mate, Barack Obama, of Illinois.
Both candidates entered the final days of the election neck in neck in key swing states. When New Hampshire went for McCain early in the evening, the Republicans began early celebrations. The mood fell when Florida was declared for Clinton at 11 P.M. and a Democratic victory seemed certain. But the count stretched on in Oregon, which finally went for McCain by just over 3,000 votes. This gave the Republican Senator the needed electoral votes to secure a win over Clinton.
However, on December 7, 2008, just over a month after his victory in the general election, President-elect McCain suffered a heart failure and died. As he technically had not yet been elected President by the electoral college, Warren was instead selected by the college to be the next President. This also allowed the electoral college to immediately elect her choice for Vice President, Aaron Reid, rather than require Reid to go through a Congressional approval process.
