Literacy hovers around 40%, which is a big improvement over 1990- 12%. Burkina Faso remains one of the poorest nations in the world. The recent drought hasn't helped matters. Burkinabe still migrate to wealthier [[Cote d'Ivoire]] and [[Ghana]] and are treated poorly there. [[List of current heads of state and government|President]] [[Philippe Dakio]] has pledged to make better treatment of nationals abroad an activist effort for his administration, to little avail thus far.
