When I was on the Glory last month there were a lot of people who were interested in TribeWanted because they had heard a little bit about it. This is what I said:
"My interest in TW started when I read an article in USAToday about a group of people who were trying to make a difference on a beautiful, undeveloped island in Fiji. These guys, Ben and Mark, had the idea of helping a Fijian tribe in Northern Fiji to attract tourists to their island without disturbing or destroying the natural beauty around them... which is what happens so often when big development companies come in. You know the score.. tear everything down, destroy what is natural, and then build up a bunch of fake and convoluted imitations of "local nature." In the process the local people get shifted away and natural environments are destroyed without any thought to the ecology or environment around it. Just look around you hear in Mahajual to see what I am talking about (you all would not believe all the construction and DESTRUCTION that was going on in this lovely part of Mexico in order to create a few more Columbian Emeralds stores and Fat Tuesday bars. It was disgusting and everyone lamented the loss of what was there.)
The island is called Vorovoro and it is incredibly beautiful, with a coral reef within swimming distance of the shore, and home to Chief Tui Mali and some of the most wonderful, welcoming people you could wish to meet anywhere.
The thing that is totally unique and interesting about TW, though, is that we have harnassed the power of the internet to bring people from all over the planet together to offer ideas and plans on what exactly to do on Vorovoro. It is we members who are actually shaping the direction of development on Vorovoro, not some corporate board whose sole interest is squeezing every last cent of profit from the land. We discuss all the issues in online forums, and then we TribeWanted members vote on what is to be done. As members, we also get to visit the island and interact with our local Fijian tribe family who are doing a majority of the work of building whatever it is we come up with.
6 months ago this was just an idea. Today we are 1000 members strong and our first members have arrived in Vorovoro to a great welcoming celebration and the beginning of development. So far, issues from human waste management to what will the first structures be have not only been debated, but completed and our first building, the Great Bure, is almost finished.
If you ever wanted to make a difference in the world, see an exotic part of the planet which is yet unspoiled, AND meet some of the most wonderful bunch of people you could imagine... .then I suggest you join Tribe Wanted.
It is about making a difference. It is about fellowship. It is about what you leave behind you when your gone. It is an experience of a life time and I am heartily glad I joined."
