Light is a smart, ambitious, self-righteous teenager who hates to lose. He's been described as immature, childish even, but he would never admit to that. Light thinks that he is above everyone else, and is easily bored. He usually gets what he wants, when he wants it, and when he doesn't, he is furious. However, he hides this well, and he remains calm in most situations where any other person would freak out.

Light Yagami aspires to be the head of the NPA, so that he can remove criminals from society and make the world a better place. And this goal is not unrealistic. By the time he was 17, he had already helped the NPA solve multiple cases, leading to the capture of violent criminals. Light's chance to make a difference comes much earlier than expected when he picks up the Death Note by chance one day after school. This notebook claims on the first page that the human whose name is written inside shall die.
Although he assumes the notebook is just a silly prank, he takes it home with him anyways. Just to prove that it isn't real, he turns on the television and writes down the name Kurou Otoharada. This man was holding eight hostages in a nursery school on live television. When the hostages run from the building claiming that their captor had died, Light still does not accept the truth. He goes out in search of somebody to kill with the Death Note, somebody who he'd know if they died immedeately.
Walking home from prep school the same evenging, Light witnesses a group of bikers harassing a woman. As soon as one of the men gives his name, he writes it down with "traffic accident" as the cause of death. Seconds afterwards, the man is crushed by a truck, proving that the Death Note is real. Light decides that he will use to Death Note to kill off all the violent criminals in the world. By doing this, he plans to create a new world, free of war and crime, which he will reign over as a god.
It doesn't take people long to realize that somebody is killing off criminals. People everywhere are calling him Kira, and the world is divided on their opinions of him. Some call him a savior, while others call him a menace. The world's best detective, a man called L, soon makes it known that he will catch Kira, no matter what the costs. After a long battle, in which Light and L both pull off some brilliant schemes, Light comes out as the victor.
Light then takes L's place as the head of the Kira investigation team, making it impossible for him to get caught. Years pass, and the combined efforts of L's successors finally bring him to justice. He panics, and begs the Shinigami Ryuk to save him. In response, Ryuk writes his name into his Death Note, and he dies. But Light does not stay dead. He wakes up soon after, stripped of everything but his bloody watch, on the other side of the flux-gate...
