Itachi is calm, collected, and in control. He’s pretty indifferent about everything and couldn’t care less about other’s problems unless it effects him, either immediately or in the long run. He doesn’t waste time and will do what he thinks is necessary as he sees fit, so you probably shouldn’t turn your back, not that he’s any safer from the front.

The main ability of Uchiha Itachi is his sharigan, which is a bloodline trait that allows him to see chakra [energy], copy movements, perceive an opponent’s attack, and respond accordingly. The speed of his hands while doing jutsu [hand signs] is extra-ordinary and for even a competent shinobi [ninja], it is hard to see all of his hand signs. His mastery of genjutsu [mental iluusions] is high and he can trap someone in an illusion by simply pointing his finger. The Mangekyo Sharigan gives him more high-level techniques including Tsukiyomi and Amaterasu. The Tsukiyomi allows Itachi to manipulate time and space [basically] and torture someone for what seems like days to the victim when only a few seconds have passed. Amaterasu is used to create a black flame that can burn through incredibly tough materials. The use of the Mangekyo appears to put an incredible strain on Itachi’s eyes and it fatigues him greatly, so it’s used rarely; but, it also appears that his eyesight may be degrading because of this technique.
As Itachi would rather stand back, he often uses clones to do his close-range combat. He can explode these clones at will using the ‘Bushin Daibakuha’ technique and the resulting explosion is lethal if you get caught in it. Being an Uchiha, who were known for their fire techniques, he can use the Katon! Goukakyu no Jutsu, a giant fireball/blast of fire to catch an opponent offguard.
When he goes through the gate into town, Itachi’s sharigan is limited in his genjutsu abilities. If there is chakra to be sensed, he can see it and react accordingly, but no longer can he use the Mangekyo’s techniques nor create illusions via genjutsu. His amount of chakra is determined by how fickle the gate is being at the time.

Itachi is the first son of Mikoto and Fugaku Uchiha. He was considered a genius and proved it by mastering his bloodline trait, the Sharingan, by age 8 and becoming a Chuunin [level of shinobi] by 10 years old. His skills were used by his father as they all saw him as the future of the Uchiha Clan, but his relationship with his father slowly grew sour. Itachi began to act suspiciously, and when his best friend ‘committed suicide’, people started to believe he was the cause and it was a murder. After taking physical action against those who tried to threaten them, he was estranged from his father, even while living together. He started to miss assignments, and eventually, he killed his entire clan, leaving only his younger brother alive. He tells Sasuke to live on and hate him, to keep running until he could kill him, and that by killing his ‘best/closest friend’, he could obtain the pinnacle of power the Sharingan has to offer.
He joins the Akatsuki somewhere around this time, and takes on their goals. He is partnered with Hoshigaki Kisame with whom he gets along with well enough. His goal in the Akatsuki is to capture Naruto and the Kyuubi [Nine Tailed Fox] inside of him.
