[edit] Personality
Harley has a vivacious, effusive and highly expressive personality, quick to show affection for her loved ones, just as quick to anger and snap. She is a woman of extremes in all things. Her mood swings, whilst nowhere near as violent as Joker's, are still extreme. She experiences all emotions intensely and passionately. She is undyingly loyal to The Joker and often ends up as a bit of a 'door mat' to him, being cowed by his more dominant personalities. Whilst Harley seems merely zanily playful, she is absolutely insane, unpredictable and therefore highly dangerous. Her love for The Joker makes her fiercely defensive and protective of him and she will go beyond the extreme to defend him or their love to anyone who questions it. She will do whatever it takes to help his dreams come to fruition as well as pursue her own goals with the same fervor. Harley believes that The Batman is the source of Joker's pain and hates him as a consequence. This makes her a deadly enemy to the Dark Knight, none more so than when she is fighting by the side of her man. Although her true personality has been subjugated by The Joker, beneath it all Harley remains a sweet lovable person

[edit] History
Harleen's life before college is currently unknown. She obviously has spent a good portion of her life as a practicing Gymnast. Her skills earned her a Gymnastic scholarship to Gotham University. Being the type of personality to seek out praise and attention she sought out a degree in Psychology, the most prestigious school within the University. Unfortunately for her, she was never really focused on her studies and as a result did not earn the best of grades. In an attempt to enter the graduate program, Harley devised and experiment based on her theory about the correlation between love and crime. She chose her boyfriend, Guy Kopski, at the time as her test subject. She makes up a crime that she had committed and tells Guy about it. Her experiment goes awry when he takes up a gun and she goes after him to stop him. She arrives too late and finds he has already killed a man to protect her. Caught up in the situation, Harley cops to the experiment and Kopski turns the gun on himself at finding out the ruse. As a result, she decides that she has to meet the Joker by interning at Arkham Asylum. To do this she blackmails her Department Head into passing her with the highest grades possible and the internship at Arkham. In an ironic twist, her college escapades are later revealed to have been a behavioral experiment by the very same Department Head that she blackmailed. She avenged her former boyfriend's death by tormenting the Head and later leaving him for dead when he contaminates himself with Joker Toxin after trying to kill her with it. Upon finally arriving at Arkham as an intern, the only time she'd be there as anything but an inmate, she met Dr. Joan Leland. Dr. Leland is the one to show her around and make her feel comfortable in her knew environment. It is the Doctor that teaches Harley everything she would even need to know about the building, the doctors and the inmates. Of course only one inmate has Harley's full attention, The Joker. It seems that she had caught his attention as well, as he chose to leave her a lovely memento in her office one day. He had given her a rose addressed form himself personally. This action shocked her, and Harley approached the dangerous psychopath about the rose. He told her that he loved her name and that it reminded him of Harlequin, the classic French clown character of Commedia dell'Arte. The encounter drove her to plead with Dr. Leland for over three months to have a session with the Clown prince of Criminals. Once she had secured the session she studied everything she could get her hands on about the man. She felt that she could handle anything the maniacal clown could throw at her. Unfortunately, she was not prepared for the tale he spun for her. He told her about his childhood at the hands of an abusive father and the torments of the Batman. This story set the stage for her fall and after a few more sessions with the man she would one day follow unfailingly, Harley found herself in love with him. When the Joker escaped, she slowly went insane worrying for him. She followed him closely in the news until the day he was returned to Arkham beaten to a pulp by the Dark Knight. What little sanity she could still lay claim to escaped her as she witnessed first hand the abuse the Joker had softened her to. She rushed to a nearby costume shop and stole the supplies to make her self into Harley Quinn, the madcap playmate and partner of the Joker. Of course with her help the Joker again escaped.
Throughout the many bouts of freedom from the confines of Arkham Asylum, Harley Quinn has many adventures and kills many people while partnered with her Puddin. Most of these psychotic adventures are not overly noteworthy, though one in particular showcases the clarity and cunning that make Harley a deadly opponent and dangerous criminal. At one point Harley gets in her mind that the only way to cheer her beau up is to catch the Batman and kill him with a smile. She manages to capture the Dark Knight, something the Joker can never truly boast of, and devises a grand scheme to do the Bat in. She strings him upside down over a tank of piranhas that have been given smiles thanks to the Joker Toxin. She does this so that his frown would look like a smile as he dies. Unfortunately her plan doesn't get to come to fruition as the Joker is highly displeased with Harley's gift. His reason for being angry is that she explained the joke. As every comedian knows, 'It's not funny if you have to explain the joke.' At one point The Joker finds himself beginning to care for her. Naturally, this can't be countenanced, so he decides to kill her. After he takes an apparently drugged Harley into his bed for what may or may not be the consummation of their relationship, he lures her into a rocket ship. He launches the rocket, soberly telling an enraged Harley that he will truly mourn her, before erupting into a fit of his trademark diabolical laughter. The rocket lands in Robinson Park, where Harley first meets Poison Ivy. Ivy saves her, but after taking her in, recognizes Harley as Dr. Quinzel from the Arkham staff. When Harley regains consciousness, Ivy initially plans to kill her. The prospect of her own death totally fails to move Harley, and Ivy is curious as to why. She convinces Harley to tell her story, and comes to feel a kinship with Harley. Considering her another castoff, Ivy offers to help Harley take her revenge on both Batman and the Joker. The ladies partner up and wreak a little havoc of their own for some time. Eventually they become notorious enough that Hollywood decides to make a movie about them. Harley convinces Ivy to hijack the film. Harley takes it upon herself to produce the movie so that it ‘accurately’ portrays the duo. Eventually Batman steps in and takes them back to Arkham before they can kill anyone, but not before the movie is finished. Harley manages to win an academy award for her insane and off the wall movie. After their brief partnership, Ivy gives Harley a treatment that immunizes her to various assorted toxins and Ivy's own poisonous touch. It also enhances Harley's strength and speed. Ivy intends this to give her new friend an edge on Batman and the Joker. Hot-blooded Harley, however, is angrier at the Joker than at Batman, and even initially works with the Dark Knight to help bring down the Clown Prince of Crime. While Batman eliminates the villain's muscle, Quinn chases the Joker up a damaged building, intending to send him falling to his death. Before she can do so, however, the Joker apologizes. Falling in love with him again, she forgives him on the spot, and serves as his lieutenant.
