[edit] Personality

Ennis was a blindly obedient slave to Szilard Quates until the day she killed an immortal, taking all of his knowledge and memories into herself, learning of sin and morality for the very first time. She'd been plagued with guilt due to her part in the murders of all sorts of people before and since, but had no other option than to continue to obey or die. Ennis envied the people who complained that there was no meaning in their existence, because she knew her purpose all too well--the tool and weapon of the one who had created her. She manages to survive by clinging onto and savoring the moments of silence in-between orders, causing her to become a quiet and withdrawn individual, only speaking when necessary. However, when she made friends for the first time, she became honestly and fiercely loyal to them to the point where she would literally throw her life away to keep them safe. After Szilard is killed and Ennis is free, she settles into a more carefree existence and slowly begins to express herself, most apparent in her wish to have people she could call family in her life. Due to her unique creation and life, Ennis is mentally and physically mature, but slow to grow emotionally, and occasionally displays childlike traits as a result. Despite her lack of experience with emotions, Ennis is extremely smart and observant, noticing things that easily slip by another's attention. She would get along best with children and adults who behave like children, being easily pulled into excitable people's shenanigans, but tends to keep to herself if she can get away with it rather than approaching others on her own.

[edit] Powers and Abilities

CANON: Immortal [recovers from all damage within minutes, no matter how extensive, and can only be permanently killed by other immortals]; extensive knowledge of fighting techinques, languages, cooking, driving, law, and money transactions among other skills useful in Szilard Quates' quest to hunt down the remaining immortals.

AU: Mortal; fighting power is limited to slightly above average human ability, but remembers all techniques; retains all other knowledge.

[edit] History

In 1711, a group of alchemists on board a ship on route to America summoned a demon, hoping to obtain the Cure-All Elixir. Their efforts paid off, and they received a liquor granting them immortality, but when the demon taught only one of them how to recreate it and revealed that the immortals could kill each other and receive all the others' knowledge and memories in the process, the alchemist decided to seal the recipe, fearing a massacre if it were to ever be released to the public. However, his decision angered one of the others, who immediately went on a killing spree in an effort to get the recipe for himself. Through the efforts of the surviving alchemists, they managed to throw him off the ship, but fearing his eventual return, they scattered across the globe, hiding within the darkest corners of human society.

Szilard Quates, the rogue alchemist, continued hunting down his fellow alchemists for over two hundred years before finding Maiza Avaro, the one who knew the recipe, but in the meantime, he used the knowledge he had gathered to create homunculi and attempt to rediscover the elixir himself. Ennis is his latest homunculus, created after the previous ones eventually turned on him. However, as he used his own immortal cells to create them, killing them was as simple as willing them to die. Szilard is unaware of it, but Ennis, whose knowledge of emotion was previously limited only to the fear of death at his hands, had begun to become capable of more after she'd been ordered to kill an immortal and received knowledge of morality for the first time as a result. She feels immensely guilty about her part in the murders of the past and present, but has no other choices other than obedience or her own death.

The two of them return to New York City when they hear that Szilard's subordinates have completed the elixir, but due to a certain string of events, the storehouse burns to the ground and the bottles saved from the fire are stolen. Ennis is sent out to recover the elixir from the thieves, but as it changes hands, she has a couple fateful encounters, first meeting a young man named Firo Prochainezo about to be promoted within his Camorra [a mafia-like organization] who falls in love with her at first sight, and then running into a pair of thieves named Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent who become her very first friends after she saves them from a group of violent street thugs. In the end, the elixir ends up being served at Firo's promotion party, creating a whole new generation of immortals, and Maiza is discovered within that very organization. When Szilard appears to kill him, the entire Camorra is pulled into the struggle along with Isaac and Miria. When the two thieves are put in danger, Ennis revolts against Szilard to give them an opportunity to escape, but is immediately paralyzed with a single thought. Isaac and Miria try to save her, managing to stall Szilard until Firo and the rest of the Camorra reappear. Follows Ennis' instructions, Firo manages to kill him, acquiring all his knowledge and memories. Because of this, he is able to save Ennis by replacing Szilard's immortal cells with his own, granting new life to her dying body.

Ennis began to live with Firo immediately after, grateful to him for saving her life and wanting to thank him by helping him however she could, but due to her slow emotional growth, she wouldn't be capable of returning his affections until many, many years later. However, since he's well aware of her limits due to the knowledge he received, Firo is extremely patient and doesn't kiss her or confess his feelings for at least a year [I believe she finds out how he feels in 1933--but not from him]. Meanwhile, in 1931, after misinterpreting a letter Ennis sent them, in which she wrote about how she regretted not being able to meet her homunculus brothers, Isaac and Miria assume that she wants a kid brother, so they bring her Czeslaw Meyer [who drank the elixir when he was ten on board the ship in 1711] as a 'souvenir' when they return to New York, and he begins to live with her and Firo as well after she adopts him as her younger brother. Along with Firo, Isaac, and Miria, Ennis feels like she'd finally been granted a family all her own.
