Darth Maul was raised from a very young age to be a living weapon, to use all the dark emotions that he felt: the fear, the hate, the anger; to turn himself into an instrument of the dark side.
However, through all this utilization of all these dark emotions, Maul was able to control himself beyond all else, his cool and calm demeanour only breaking when he wished it to. However, as many that faced him learned, the strong and silent stranger could quickly become a blood-soaked berserker within a second's time. Unfortunately, all the combat prowess that his amazing skills produced also resulted in the Sith's greatest flaw, his sense of pride (which would ultimately lead to be his downfall).
Beyond the hate and the dark-side that so permeates his life, Maul holds himself to a very strict honour-code, looking down on those that fear or misunderstand their capabilities or their potential. Survival of the fittest has come to be the Darth's greatest belief, and he disdains all think differently.
[edit] Powers and Abilities
Darth Maul is a skilled lightsaber duelist, trained by Darth Sidious in Form VII, which drew on emotions and the dark side. Maul also mastered of the fighting style of Teräs Käsi, and was also skilled in the Jar'Kai style of duo-saber fighting. Unlike the traditional dueling techniques of most Jedi, Maul combined his swordsmanship with martial arts and hand-to-hand combat skills—a combination which made him a nearly unstoppable dervish of destruction. When fighting multiple opponents, Maul extended the second blade of his double-bladed lightsaber to form a saberstaff, doubling his lethality as Jedi rarely faced such a weapon. Maul often used this to catch opponents by surprise. Maul had constructed this weapon himself, using ancient plans stored within one of the holocrons the Sith still possessed. He had based his lightsaber design upon that of Darth Zannah's weapon, which in turn had been a development on Exar Kun's original design. It is likely that this choice also came from his species' penchant for the zhaboka, a similar weapon.
However, Maul only devoted himself to the Form's physical focus, desiring pure physical victory, rather than the "higher" Sith tradition of Dun Möch, dominating the opponents spirit and exposing his inner doubts through taunts and psychological warfare.
Darth Maul is also skilled in combining Force talents with mechanics. Sidious gave Maul the funds and schematics he needed, and provided his apprentice with a secret facility on Coruscant in which to work.
Having much of his connection to the force been deadened due to his trip through the Flux-gate, Maul has lost many of the almost supernatural skills that the dark side empowered his body with. Fortunately, having trained heavily in numerous fighting styles that were merely enhanced by the force and not reliant on it, Maul still retains his amazing fighting abilities as well as all the strength and speed his athletic form can provide.

Typically, all of those that fall to the Sith come from lives of their own before acquiring their Darth title and becoming living avatars of the dark side. This was not the case for Darth Maul, however...
Khamier Sarin, as Maul was known before he obtained his Darth status, was taken at a very young age by one Darth Sidious, who quickly immersed the young iridonian into the secrets and powers of the Dark Side. He taught the boy to hate all those that clung to the light side, he taught him how to kill as easily as one would draw a breath, and trained him with the skills necessary to turn the iridonian into the weapon the Dark Lord so desired.
Once the iridonian had been completely honed into such a weapon, he earned both his title "Darth Maul", as well as the sith Markings that cover the entirity of his form, the process of applying the marks being painful in teh extreme. It was at this point that maul was put through countless trials and tests, each testing his already formidable combat capabilities to their very limit.
Almost immediately after Maul completed his final trial of throwing the intergalactic criminal organization known as the "Black Sun", he was dispatched to eliminate the Jedi who had been sent by the Republic to settle the conflict. Having located said Jedi via an emergency transmission that ahd been sent to the vessel the jedi had rode to the planet of tatooine, Darth Maul engaged the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Following a brief but intense duel Qui-Gon escaped, but with the fear of what would become the eventual revenge of the Sith. Maul, having failed in his task to prevent Queen Amidala and the Chosen One from reaching Coruscant, was eager to exact revenge on the Jedi Knights. In a second, vicious duel on Naboo—this time against both the Master and the apprentice—Maul showed his true mastery of the lightsaber arts.
The battle was long and one sided as Maul lead the Jedi into a reactor room. Unfortunately for Jinn, Obi was knocked several flights down onto another catwalk and severed from the battle. As the dark lord and Jinn made their way into the reactor room, they were separated by force fields, as well as Obi Wan who was left farther behind. As the force fields cleared once more, Maul and Jinn battled once more. Jinn was very weary and short-handed and in no time could not sense Mauls next move. With a hit to the Jinn's face, Maul made a backward thrust that sliced through Jinn's upper abdomen. This struck Obi-Wan with shock and anger as Maul seemed to mock him. With a final opening of the force field, a fresh —Obi-Wan Kenobi—assaulted a tired Maul. For a short while, the rage-filled young Kenobi managed to hold his own against Maul, even cutting Maul's lightsaber in half and knocking him off his feet. However, Maul quickly recomposed himself, and rapidly fought the young Jedi to a standstill. Just as the young Padawan began to make a death blow, Maul used his more masterous force skills to throw Obi-Wan into a melting pit. Kenobi hung onto a small device on the side of the pit as Maul grinned, predicting his victory, from above.
Despite his predicament, Obi-wan calmed himself. Kenobi used the Force to leap out of the melting pit and summon his Master's lightsaber to his hand. The Padawan sliced Maul in half at the waist causing the Dark Lord to flinch in shock. Maul fell to his apparent death, into the melting pit, in silence. However, before his body clattered to the very bottom of the rather deep pit, Maul fell through into an entirely new reality, landing heavily on solid ground to find hismelf once again whole.
