NB - thanks to the person who provided this, but you originally saved it in 'discussion'. We really do want you to amend the original text on the pages! That's what a wiki is for. Discussion is for chat about who the letters have been sent to, what you think of them, etc. We've cut and pasted your version in.

One of the roles of HMRC is to help customers get their tax returns right, so that they pay the right amount of tax or receive the right benefits.

We are testing new ways of working with customers which we believe will be less time consuming and less complicated than other procedures we use. Your participation in this trial is voluntary and this is not a notice of intention to enquire under our existing formal powers.

We feel that these new approaches will help customers to deal with any mistakes quickly and get their tax right in the future.

The figure entered for sales/turnover on your 2005 Income Tax or Corporation Tax Self Assessment return or a recent VAT Return was a round sum. There may be valid reasons for this and the figure may be accurate. In our experience, however, this commonly indicates that the amount has been estimated, often due to there being incomplete records.

I would like you to look at the records you kept. When you have reviewed these, would you by (30 days) let me know how the figure for turnover was calculated, together with:

 confirmation that the figure for turnover is correct; or

 Your revised turnover figure, so that I can recalculate your tax liabilities.

If there is anything you do not understand or would like to discuss, you are welcome to ring me on the above number.
