Stories

Trouble on the Road

Green Arrow longs for a change of scenery, only running from York to Scarborough on railtours. He gets his chance when, due to some poor quality coal, James is put out of action. On the way, however, Green Arrow's lowloader runs into trouble.

Frozen Pipes

It is winter, and Green Arrow tells Jinty a story about the Orient Express getting stuck in a massive snowdrift, an actress on board changing her act thereafter. Afterwards, Jinty is allowed to take a local passenger train to Peel Godred, and forgets Green Arrow's advice, due to his enjoyment of the journey. He becomes stuck in a drift, and ends up with frozen cylinder pipes and frozen reversing gear. Green Arrow comes to the rescue, and Jinty apologises for forgetting his advice.

Gravity Rescue

Green Arrow collides with a tree which has been blown over due to bad weather, and derails. As the telephone lines have been brought down by the bad weather, Green Arrow's crew run their brake coach by gravity back to Ballahoo, where they gain assistance from Henry and some workmen. Green Arrow is congratulated for his plan, even if it did bend some rules.

Green Arrow's Railtour

Green Arrow offers to rescue a stranded railtour. However, his journey is plagued with problems. The coal he is using (which put James out of action) is causing problems, and cleaning him out delays the train. He is forbidden a water-stop by the signalman at Killdane, as he would have to leave his train blocking the line due to the position of the water-tower. He runs out of water near Edward's Station, but, using hoses and water from a stream - they eventually get going again.

Notes

  • Featured Characters: BoCo, Donald, Douglas, Gordon, Green Arrow, Henry, James, Jinty, Rod, Thomas, Fat Controller
  • Introduced Characters: Paula Von Werner (Actor)
  • Introduced Locations: N/A
  • Green Arrow was previously featured in Christopher Awdry's volume 'Thomas and the Great Railway Show'.
  • The incident in 'Trouble on the Road' is based on an incident when a low-loader, conveying Standard 4MT 2-6-0 no. 76079, ran into trouble when part of a minor road collapsed beneath the weight of the engine and its lowloader, on 26th November 1998. The rain sodden road split and tipped the engine and trailer to said angle.
  • The incident in 'Frozen Pipes' is based on an incident, as quoted in the story, which occurred in Turkey, 1929. The Orient Express became stuck in a massive snowdrift in horrendous conditions, and the passengers, including the said actress, were trapped for six days before they could be rescued.
  • The incident in 'Gravity Rescue' is based on an incident which occurred in America, in Vermont in 1862, though engine named 'General Stark' struck a cow that had wondered onto its line. The crew did exactly as described in the story, (running the coach back) probably as there was no telephone in those days.
  • The incident in 'Green Arrow's Railtour' is based not only on a real life event, but on an event which actually occurred to Green Arrow. It occurred on the Settle and Carlisle Railway sometime in 2001. It ran into trouble near Garsdale, and the method of re-watering happened exactly as described in the story.
