Down On Poppy's Farm

From Sodor Island Forums

'Down On Poppy's Farm' is an Independant Work created by member 01Salty. It revolves around a group of farm vehicle living on a farm in a small country town called 'Bridgedale'. The farm is run by Danny Bennett and his son Trevor Bennett, whom both inherited the farm after their grandfather died.

How the Story Came to Be

01Salty grew up in a small NSW town of Bega, of which farming and heritage is a common aspect. His grandparents run a dairy farm, and are members of a classical and vintage car club. His fascination with older vehicles started at a young age, as his first word was 'tractor'! His love of farm vehicles, and hobby of alive vehicles were put together by him at the age of around 9, as the first two characters were made, 'Rusty' and 'Charlotte'. Thomas the Tank Engine TV Show helped with his love of alive vehicles, and inspired him to create his own characters. At first, all of his characters were made up with unreal and original prototypes of vehicles, and it wasn't until recently when he realised basing them on real vehicles was necessary for maximum accuracy and realisticity. The town they lived in remained undecided until a few years ago when the name 'Bridgedale' popped into his head. Other towns have been created and named, and are explained below somewhere. Many characters have been made since then, ranging from Motorbikes to Ice Cream Vans. Most of them will also be featured below.

Mapping of Bridgedale

The name of 'Bridgedale' doesn't mean anything much, as it just came into 01Salty's head. He later wrote a small history about the discovery, naming, and expansion of Bridgedale, and it's surrounding towns. These towns were soon mapped as Turlyville (North-most town), Orkmenton, Westberg (eastern-most town) and Damptown (southern-most town). A map of these will be displayed soon. A location of these towns were placed on a area called Rofet Coast*, although the country/island they are seen on is still in pending. There are many landmarks and places in these towns and areas, of which will be explained further down.

Towns

Turlyville

Turlyville was the first town to be constructed along Rofet Coast, and is the largest out of all the current towns. It was started in the late 1700's by the explorer Sir Richard Turly, and proved a successful residential area. It was the town of the 'to be' Bridgedale founder, Michael Uberaihien. This town has a strong import and export industry, and often helps with supplies to Bridgedale, and visa versa. The population of Turlyville is 10,000 people.

Bridgedale

Bridgedale, the home of our farm friends, is the second largest town on the coast. It plays host to well maintained industry and agriculture, with it's own railway (explained below), with Mt. Ubro and Grandpa Oak as popular tourist attractions. Bridgedale was founded by Michael Uberaihien, whom discovered the rich soil, and suggested the idea of the new town and name (at first it was called 'Bridgeydale', but changed in the early 1900's). The name was from the fact when Michael first discovered the land, his dog ran away, and he made a bridge to cross the Garrard River to get him back. He realised the bridge was somewhat significant, and soon the town was named after it. A tall statue of Michael is now found in front of the town court house. The population of Bridgedale is approximately 9,000 people.

Orkmenton

The middle town along Rofet Coast, and is considered still quite small. It only has 3000 people, and is proud of it's lumbering industry. It has well cultivated land, and also hosts the coast's largest vegetable competition. It was founded by Lord Elias Orkment in the early 1800's.

Damptown

Damptown's name is pretty self explanatory. This was the most recent town to be constructed, and only has around 1,500 residents. It has a seaside feel to it, but constantly gets rain and storms, as it's so far down south. The rain however helps farming, so many farms have been made down there, with it's food trade serving their economy well. The land down there is rather spread out and remote, and sometimes gets confused for being just a big street!

Westberg

This town was founded just after Bridgedale, around the same time era. It resides in between two huge pairs of mountains, far from the sea. Because of this, it is quite dry, and is often considered a 'Western Cowboy' town. It's quite small, but not as small as Damptown. Ironically, Westberg is the most Eastern town of Rofet Coast, as the explorers to who named had a faulty compass, and named it the after the opposite direction! Westberg is most recognised with it's large mining and quarry industry.

Places

Rofet Coast hosts a range of landmarks and areas:

Mt. Ubro

Mt. Ubro is the largest mountain along Rofet Coast, and is located on the Eastern Side of Bridgedale. It is the host of Bridgedale lookout, Bridgedale Scouts, and a Mountain Building Yard. The Railway runs along and around this mountain, and a few small roads run near it.

Dark Cully Forest (With Lobegieger Lake)

Dark Cully Forest has been in/near Bridgedale since before Bridgedale was established. It is rather big, and considered quite spooky at night. It hosts the K.Arl LTD. Tree Lopping Crew, and has a lake nearby called Lobegieger Lake, infamous for it's strange creature sightings (of which none have been proven though).

Grandpa Oak

Grandpa Oak is a tree on a hill near the sea, beside the Main Road of Bridgedale's shops and stores. It was called that in comemoration of the oldest and biggest tree in Bridgedale, and is featured in a small park. It is considered a favourite among locals, and a good tourist attraction.

Buster Dam

This Dam was built along the Garrard River, and named after the Bus called Buster. This dam help control water levels, and also acts as a bridge connecting roads from Bridgedale to Orkmenton.

Garrard River

Garrard River is a large river that runs around the edge of Bridgedale, and is useful for some water supply, and a popular swimming hole in some areas. It connects to the Canal, and at one area has a small waterfall up near Mt. Ubro. During the raining seasons, it proves trouble as it has great surges of water and occasional floods near the lower ground. This river runs all the way down Rofet Coast, and connects to the sea just below Damptown.

Bridgedale Canal

This canal was made to help water get to the ocean for more flow and environmental purposes. It was made early during the town's construction, and plays a host to Bob's home, and many house boats and shops.

Aitken Bridge

Aitken Bridge was one of the first bridges to be made in Bridgedale, and it has been called the oldest bridge in Bridgedale. It's around 30 metres long, and almost 100 years old. Despite it's age, it stands strong, but is weak against bigger trucks. A second bridge was built a few metres down especially for the heavier cargo, but Aitken Bridge is still the favourite past- time 'ornament'.

Head to Head Bridge

This bridge started as just a regular one-lane bridge, but was recognised thanks to a pair of very stubborn trucks (story found below). The bridge almost collapsed with the incident, and soon it was modified with a second lane, and given the name is has today by Danny, who was there at the time of the incident.

Rusty is based on a 1946 Bedford Truck.

  • Charlotte

Charlotte is a car, and has been Danny's car for many years. He found her in a scrapyard, and ended up buying her for a bunch of old lawnmowers! She was restored, and has proved faithful to Danny for many years. When they inherited the farm, Charlotte became good friends with all the farm vehicles, and looks forward to her best friend, Bonkers, to deliver the mail every morning. She loves to be clean, and can become snobby and pompous if feeling proud.

Charlotte is based on a 1949 Ford Prefect.

  • Harry

Harry is a harvester, and one of the friendliest members of the family. He keeps busy ploughing his field, and enjoys a good joke or two with his best friend Claude. He loves his coat of paint, and enjoys helping out his friends. He is one of the oldest members of the family, but is still quite young and cheeky.

Harry is based on a Sunshine Harvester.

  • Gordon

Gordon is the local grump of the farm, and enjoys teasing and intimidating the younger vehicles. He doesn't like big amounts of work, which soon leads to him grumbling like anything, and driving the others crazy. But he does mean well, and does help out wherever needed..As long as there's something in it for him.

Gordon is based on a tractor (prototype undecided as yet)

  • Arnold

Arnold is a small traction engine, who was the first vehicle to work on the farm, back in the late 1800's. He is old and wise, and occasionally temperamental, and prone to exhaustion and breaking down. Danny still uses him, as he gives a feel of heritage and old-fashioned pride. He loves to talk about the old days, and occasionally bores the others with his tales. His age sometimes leads to confusion and subbornness, but he still proves useful, and a valuable member of the team.

Arnold is based on a Lanz HR5 Traction Engine

  • Claude

Claude is a crawler with an attachable snowplough/blade. He works hard hauling goods, and is extremely helpful in the rainy and muddy seasons. His treads sometimes cause redicule, but he knows he'd be nothing without them. He uses his blade to help move and load dirt or gravel, and is proud to be the only farm member to do so. He loves jokes, and usually shares some humour with Harry in the barn on a cold night. Claude however is inclined to boast, and experienced trouble when he said he wasn't scared of the dark, but a trick changed his mind!

Claude is based on an 1939 International Crawler.

  • Simon

Simon is the biggest and most powerful member of the farm, and knows it! He likes to show off, and sometimes can be moody and stubborn when proved wrong. He especially hates it when younger ones get the better of him, but he is always glad to help out. He occasionally helps a fellow tractor with a load, and even gives advice to the less experienced, as he considers himself an expert at farm working. At one stage, he was given a siren as a

Simon is based on a McCormick Tractor.

  • Bubbles

Bubles is the second youngest member of the farm, and is basically a custom made car for farm-use. He is mainly used for travel around the farm, as it's size is overwhelming for walking. Bubbles doesn't get out much, but is delighted when he does. He loves to look at his shiny paint, but hates the farm hill after a bad experience with a failed engine. Bubbles looks up to Arnold as his hero, but is sometimes misled by Gordon or Simon, which can cause trouble.

Bubbles isn't based on any car, althought some of his parts are from real vehicles.

  • Fred

Fred is the youngest member of the farm, and tends to be confused and gullable. This is sometimes taken advantage of the others (especially Gordon), but Fred is quite diligent and loves to work. He's pleased to be on the road, after almost being sold for scrap.

Scruffie is based on a 1959 Mini Minor Coupe.

  • Stephanie

Stephanie is the Mayor's private car, and although she is glamerous and modern, she is kind and thoughtful. She loves taking the Mayor around, as she feels useful and appreciated. Stephanie is based on a 1948 Jaguar Coupe.

  • Arthur

Arthur is a crane who works in the C. Orey Scarp Yard in Bridgedale. He is the newer crane of the two cranes in the yard, and knows it. His pompous ways often land him into trouble, but he does work hard, proving somewhat useful to Bridgedale.

Arthur is based on an Erie B2 Steam Crane.

  • Clare

Clare is a traction engine converted into a crane, and works at the C. Orey Scrap also. She was the first to work there, to haul small pieces of scrap for crushing and melting down. Nowadays she is quite old, but she loves to continue working, otherwise she'd become a piece of scrap! Although she is old, she never gives up, and proved her usefulness when she rescued a truck from falling off a cliff.

Clare is based on a Fowler Traction Engine with Crane.

  • Chug

Chug is a large traction engine who lives in the Orchard at Bridgedale, and absolutely loves to go to rallies. • Madam Sophie

Madam Sohpie is a large steam paddle boat, who gives tours around the water ways near Bridgedale and beyond. Curdle is based on a 1934 Trojan Senior Milk Van.

  • Snowy

Snowy is an Ice Cream delivery van, and spends her time helping kids get refreshments on hot days and at fetes and shows. She works for the Ice Cream delivery company, as partner of the Dairy organisation. She and Curdle are best friends.

Snowy is based on an Ice Cream van (Prototype unknown).

T. Axie Cab Co.

  • Carol

Carol was the first and only cab with the company until Tanya arrived. For years she kept busy taking people to where they would want to go. She know all the roads off by heart, and likes nice quiet drives through the countryside. Nowadats her work is slightly taken over by Tanya, but she continues to push on and get her passengers to destinations on time. Most of the time she shares her knowledge and wisdom with Tanya, and sometimes acts as part of a display in some heritage vehicle shows.

Carol is based on a Veteran Taxi Cab (Prototype unknown)

  • Tanya

Tanya is the only other cab with the company aprt from Carol. She is also the newest, and loves to help take people around Bridgedale and sometimes beyond. Tanya is based on a Vintage Ford Taxi Cab.

K.Arl LTD. Tree Lugging Company

  • Chris

Backup is one of the younger machines, and never hesitates to try and act wise and professional... only sometimes it doesn't work out the way he plans!

  • Doug

Doug is a huge red digger, who often handles the larger jobs. With the help of Backup, Doug always completes his given tasks. However sometimes his sheer size proves a problem, and his tracks means he is usually slow. This however doesn't deter his work ethic, and he is considered a valuable member of the team.

  • Dexter

Dexter is the company's demolition truck, and loves to knock things to the ground. His huge wrecking ball often comes in handy when there is something in need of knocking down or breaking apart. On the other hand, when he was young he didn't know how to use it properly, and caused all sorts of mayhem!

  • Betsy

Betsy is a huge orange bulldozer, who's job it is to push dirt and rubble around on work sites. The size of her tracks and blade often intimidates the younger and smaller vehicles, but her kind sensitive side always shows, and her heart is almost as big as her blade.

  • Charlie

Charlie is a large yellow tractor crane, who was one of the elder vehicles. All his life he has lifted, carried, and hauled things, and his crane arm has seen better days. Despite this, Charlie always gets his job done, and sometimes tells stories about the past to the younger vehicles.

  • Louie

Louie, of whom his friends like to call 'Louie the Lorry' is another younger vehicle. His purpose is to carry supplies like tools or concrete to works sites, and has enjoyed his life there, after he was saved from scrap from a paddock. His best friends are Backup and Charlie, and also occasionally works at the Quarry with Pound and Dibbles.

Bridgedale Quarry & Stone Co.

  • Pound

Pound isn't based of any real driller (custom made)

  • Dibbles

Dibbles is a steam roller who works in the Quarry and around Bridgedale, keeping busy flattening tar for roads, rocks into smaller amounts, and any job requiring something being squashed. Despite his unusually large nose, he continues his business without fuss, and can sometimes proves moody and uptight. Once he visited Danny's farm for road work, and the vehicles misjudged his character by what he looked like. They soon became friends however.

  • Rodney

Rodney is an open-top railway truck used to transport stone from the Quarry to different destinations. His dirty and dusty work often makes him hot and bothered, resulting in him being mostly moody and grumpy.

Rodney is based on a 4- Wheeled open top Railway Truck (Prototype not found yet)

Dibbles is based on a steam roller (Prototype unknown)

Note: Louie and Rupert also regularly work in the Quarry

Bridgedale Airfield

He is quite cheerful and helpful, and even helped save a steam engine and coach from scrap. He has many friends in Bridgedale, and loves flying over to see the local commotions. He also loves birds, but hates stormy weather.

Herbert is based off a vintage helicopter (prototype not decided yet)

  • Jet

Jet is the latest edition to the airfield, and acts as a passenger plane if visitors want to arrive from air after Bridgedale Airfield was upgraded with a terminal. He thinks of himself as the most up-to-date aircraft there is, and never hesitates to let others know this. However, a wind incident brought his wings down a tad, and befriended the Bridgedale aircrafts.

Jet is based on an older jet plane (prototype not decided yet)

  • Tramper

Tramper is the oldest member of the Bridgedale Airfield, but is still young at heart. With three wings, he loves to pull off stunts and fly like a daredevil, which sometimes concerns those on the ground. He however knows what he's doing, after a few years gaining experience at an academy before he resided in Bridgedale. He still wears the paintjob he recieved the day he was built, and would never want to be repainted, unless it was absolutely necessary!

Tramper is based off a veteran tri-plane (prototype not decided yet)

Bridgedale Railway

  • Oscar

Oscar is one of the oldest engines on the railway, and loves to pull passengers to the few but beautiful sights on the Bridgedale Railway. After his brother Olsen was scrapped many years ago, Ollie is glad to still be in steam.

Oscar is based on a (what seems) broad gauge 2-2-2 tank engine (Prototype not found yet).

  • Rupert

Rupert arrived on the railway around the same time as Ollie, but they had never met. This was because Rupert worked at the Quarry exclusively, shunting trucks full of stones and rubble. After a few years in service, he was the victim of a mine accident, and was buried inside a mine shaft after an avalanche. He was left there for years and forgotten, until Ollie came to work at the Quarry temporarily and discovered him. Rupert was rescued and restored, and now works where he once did many years before.

Rupert is based on a 2-4-0 Tank Engine (Can't remember what prototype)

  • Bill

Bill was one of the first engines on the railway just after it opened, and worked the line with two other engines called Georgette and Cedric. He worked with his coach Belle, but when the railway closed down he and Belle were left in a shed whilst Georgette and Cedric were taken away. It was until many years later Herbert the helicopter found him, and helped him back to the railway. He and Belle were both restored, and soon back in action taking tour trains around the railway. He, like Rupert, feel very happy to be back on the rails, and has been proved useful many times.

Bill is based on a 0-2-2 tender engine similar to Stephenson's Rocket.

  • Dave

Dave one of the few diesels on Rofet Coast, and works for the Orkmenton Rail Co. At one point when he visited Bridgedale to help out, the steam engines were doubtful, but soon proved his usefulness when some trucks broke away. He works hard on his railway, however is young and tends to be cheeky and rude. One instance was when he visited again, and teased Bill for being old, but ran out of fuel on the hill run. Bill helped him back, and he learnt his lesson about respect. He is now a useful friend of the team, and wouldn't want to work anywhere else.

  • Trundle

Trundle was the first ever self-propelled vehicle on the railway. He was bought for an upgrade to the railway, which was previously horse-drawn. He runned it for a few years, but was transferred to Orkmenton when steam engines became available (Being Bill, Cedric & Georgette). But on the way a storm blew over, and the truck carrying Trundle became lost, and eventually crashed. Trundle fell off, and wasn't able to be rescued as he slid down a hill. He lay there for many years, being covered in overgrown vegetation, wondering if he would ever see upright again. It wasn't until a character (haven't decided yet) slides down the hill in the slippery roads, and finds him. Trundle is soon rescued, and sent to Turvlyville Railway Workshops for repairs. Trundle, glad to be fixed but now too old to run back on tracks, decided he would retire. Afterward, he was fixed into a small cafe just outside a station, and is very happy to be useful, and standing upright!

Trundle is based on a Standard Gauge Tram (Prototype not decided yet)

Bridgedale Railway Rolling Stock

  • Belle

Belle is Bill's coach, and has worked with him for as long as she can remember. She had a twin called Bella, who used to work with Georgette, however Belle doesn't know her recent whereabouts. Belle was very happy when Herbert rescued her and Bill from certain peril, and now carries passengers along the railway.

  • Karl

Karl is a small red railway crane, who was bought to help with railway accidents when the railway was still small. Since then, he has helped with many incidents and derailments, and recently was given an overhaul in which is received a new hook and chain, and a new coat of paint. He feels very happy to be used on the Bridgedale Railway, and sometimes is transported to other nearby railways whenever there is a big accident. He was named after a man rescued after he crashed his car.

Karl is based on a small railway crane (Prototype unknown)

Other Misc. Company Vehicles

  • Bonkers

Bonkers is the the Bridgedale post van, and has been working on the job for many years. He works with the postman, Mr. Parker, delivering letters and parcels all over the town. His best friend is Charlotte, and his crush is Gina (mentioned below).
