Here is a brief outline of the political and public bodies in Second Life:

  • The US congress has established a Virtual Capitol Hill in Second Life. Aside from a debating chamber, the island provides visitors with a comprehensive set of web links to American government services.
  • Sweden announced in January, 2007, it will open a virtual embassy in Second Life. The project is being run by the Swedish Institute - a promotional body which works alongside the foreign ministry. The Swedish Institute says the embassy will not issue passports and visas, but it will inform users how to get them in the real world. The embassy will be "primarily an information portal for Sweden," said Mr Olle Waestberg, the Institute director, quoted by the AFP news agency.
