Character History/Biography
Valerie Syence (a Norwegian surname) was a bright but unremarkable girl until about the age of fourteen. At that time she began studying mathematics and physics on her own, using the library and internet sources. Within weeks she had mastered calculus and was studying quantum mechanics. She began corresponding with numerous mathematicians and physicists, asking questions and offering insights that led many of them to breakthroughs that might otherwise have taken years--if they happened at all. She also began researching published papers on esoteric mathematical and theoretical physics topics, including unclassified papers by Rodney McKay, Samantha Carter, Charlie Epps and others.
Her attempts to contact them, and the questions and suggestions she offered produced a lot of interest in her. In addition to her demonstrated genius for mathematics, Valerie was learning numerous languages, both natural and artificial, proving to be a gifted programmer and hacker--often writing programs to assist her in her studies when none existed that served her purposes. The SGC and NID were almost certain that her intelligence had to have been augmented by exposure to some kind of alien technology (probably Ancient), but their most thorough investigations could produce no evidence for this.
Eventually the SGC made contact with Valerie, providing her with just enough previously-classified information to point her toward answers to questions she had struggled with unsuccessfully for weeks. Then they offered to provide her with more information and other resources in return for her work on some intractable problems of their own. Valerie didn't jump at the chance--she had serious reservations about the government, and the military, but eventually the need to satisfy her insatiable curiosity wore her down. She signed on, was vetted and finally given top-level security clearance.
Valerie tested out of her high school curriculum and applied for--and gained--admission to MIT at age 15. She graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at age 18, then continued her studies, earning a doctorate in Theoretical Physics at 21. Throughout her academic career she worked on a variety of problems and projects for the SGC, producing breakthroughs in most of them. Working from first principles, Valerie independently derived the basic operational parameters of the stargate and zero point modules, among other things. Upon earning a doctorate, Valerie spent the next two years doing research full-time for the US government at Area 51.
When the threat looming over earth was discovered, she was assigned to help try to determine how the aliens were accomplishing it—and how to prevent it. Obviously, she failed. As failures go, it was pretty fucking big, and it hammered a lot of the arrogance she'd acquired over the last ten years right out of her. Valerie continued her research once she was sent to the Gamma Site, corresponding with earth and other sites until Gamma Site lost contact with them. Afterward, she continued working with the administrators, organizing and coordinating the efforts of the 7500 people who make up the colony. She still works at her research, but on her own time these days.

Character Trivia and Knowledge
Valerie has never handled a firearm and tends to treat them like venomous snakes (i.e., something innately dangerous and to be avoided if at all possible).
Valerie's Nature
Valerie is inhumanly smart (quite literally--her intelligence is almost certainly the result of artificial enhancement, though neither Valerie nor anyone else knows when, where, why or how it occurred), and doesn't suffer fools gladly. She is prone to periods of prolonged and intense concentration and is extremely irritable if interrupted.
Knowledge of other characters
If by "knowledge of other characters" you mean, does she know any of their secrets? No.
