Pre-Deluge history and biography
Chel is sixteen years old who looks just her age. She is small and athletically built with a height of 5’0 and weight of 120 pounds. Her hair reaches her mid-back, and she prefers to tie it back with a simple braid or ponytail, and her bangs are long enough to hang in her face but not long enough to tuck behind her ears. Her dark brown hair and emerald eyes compliment her olive-toned skin quite well. A few light freckles are sprinkled across her face.
Chel knows how to get what she wants. Having grown up mostly on the street, she has little moral objection to theft, conning, or whoring, although, having witnessed so much death, she would prefer never to see it again. Her tough act is not entirely an act; life with a street gang has taught her how to survive on the street. She is quite proficient with switchblades and other large pocket knives. Unconsciously, Chel yearns for acceptance and family, making her a trustworthy and loyal ally, even when the loyalty is not returned. Overall, Chel is a good person who would never take advantage of anyone she felt didn’t deserve it. History: Chel has never had any luck. Born to a single mother hooked on drugs, it wasn’t very long before Chel was shipped off to foster-care. Like so many other children, she was placed in a small, crowded house with foster-parents concerned more about their monthly check than their ward. With such encouragement, Chel had lost all interest in school by 14. With her initiation into the neighborhood street gang, Chel's fingers became lighter, and her morals, placed on unsteady ground to begin with, began to slide.
Known as Chel, a nickname she prefers to Rachel, she began making a name for herself. Fortunately, fate intervened before Chel could get in over her head or become addicted to anything more serious than cigarettes. During a routine purse-snatching, Chel's boyfriend pulled a knife. Afraid that the wild young man would hurt his victim, a passing policeman called for the boy to drop his weapon. The scene ended with the death of her boyfriend and with Chel in the back of a squad car. She was 15.
Sentenced to time in juvenile detention, Chel was only there for a few months when the world changed. Wards and guards alike fell before Fate’s Handmaiden. Chel was extremely fortunate: one of the few guards left in the facility freed the prisoners before leaving the compound for good; after all, the world was already ending. Although Chel never became good friends with anyone there, she stayed on the outskirts of Chicago for a while with the handful of delinquents left alive. Predictably, the disease consumed each one-by-one, leaving Chel alone and badly frightened. Within Chicago itself, Chel found a small band of survivors, some clearly already on Death’s doorstep. The self-proclaimed leader looked at the delinquent with disdain, and so Chel, who pretended she didn’t mind being alone in what was left of the world, packed a bag and left. Chicago was filled with nothing but death and bad memories, making it, in some way, even less appealing than the unknown.
She turned 16 last week, on the road and all alone. Haven now lies on the horizon, and her fingers are crossed…
