Pre-Deluge history and biography

Jonas Ray was a self-made millionaire. World famous, he made the cover of Fortune 500, Entrepeneur, and even several Most Eligible Bachelor Lists (until he married, that is.) The son of hardworking Cuban immigrant parents, Jonas learned hard work from his father and went on to build a corporate empire. Always determined and persistent, this attitude carried over from his business life to his personal life. The day that he saw Dr. Luisa Delgado from afar, he proclaimed to his mother that he'd just seen the woman he was going to marry.

It took some work and a great deal of creativity on Jonas's part to even get a date with the stubborn, champion-of-the underdog Lu Delgado, but soon his words to his mother came true and he married Lu. When his business fell apart due to corporate scandal and embezzling (courtesy of his longtime "friend" and accountant) shortly after the couple learned Lu was pregnant, Lu held him together.

Always a man with a big heart and willing to share what he received, as his business went under, Jonas decided to pay back the share holders a portion of what they lost. He liquidated his assets, including his multi-million dollar mansion with plans for he, Lu and thier new daughter to move into the childhood home he grew up in. Unfortunately, while taking a tour of the home, the flip of a light switch ignited with gas from a gas leak and resultant explosion trapped Jonas and Lu beneath the rubble of the house. To make matters worse, Lu began bleeding. A trauma doctor and women's specialist at the prestigious Rittenhouse Hospital, Lu diagnosed herself with a detatched placenta and told Jonas that their daughter was dying. The only hope was cesearan section - and Lu would walk Jonas through the steps of performing it.

Though he balked, at Lu's insistence, Jonas did as he was instructed - beginning to perform a ceasearean section with an exacto knife and a pair of wire cutters. Fortunately, Dr. Dylan West, Lu's partner at Rittenhouse arrived in time to finish the procedure and deliver Baby Ray, whom Lu and Jonas named "Milagro" which is Spanish for miracle.

When the Deluge hit, Jonas was at home taking care of Milagro. As he watched the chaos on the news, he worried about Lu and it was nearly ten hours before she called home to let him know that ER was overflowing and she didn't know when she would be home. In preparation for her arrival and other worries, Jonas began trying to call and find Lu's son, Mark, who was away at college but it was to no avail.

As Fate's Handmaiden reared her ugly head, taking Lu away from Jonas and Milagro more and more frequently, Jonas occupied his spare time by seaching for Mark Delgado. Calling in favors and a little of the cash he did have squirreled away, he hired private detectives to track down Lu's MIA son knowing that Lu would be obsessed with Mark's survival when she wasn't focused on work. By the time Lu contracted Fate's Handmaiden, actually still forcing herself to go through the motions and work, Jonas had given up all hope of Mark being alive. However, as Lu lie on her death bed, Jonas told her one of the detectives had found Mark and he was on his way home. It was the first and only time that he ever lied to her.

Kayla Thornton, Lu's protege from Rittenhouse Hospital, was there when Lu passed on. While Jonas sat grief stricken, holding Milagro, Kayla carefully washed and prepared Lu's body. She dressed Lu in one of her favorite dresses, and then carefully sewed her into an heirloom quilt that had been passed down through Jonas's family. Jonas went through the motions, only breaking out of his grief long enough to see that Lu was buried in the Ray family plot - not far from his mother whom he'd already buried and his father who died years before.

"Kayla, if I don't make it, bury me next to Lu," Jonas told the brave young woman.

"Jonas Ray, don't ever let me hear you talk like that again. Milagro needs you," Kayla scolded him and that was the last of that. Kayla's scolding words snapped him to reality, and the reminder that he had a young daughter to care for. Promising to keep in touch, Jonas sent Kayla back to Rittenhouse and the patients who needed her.

Jonas thought that the worst of it was past, until Milagro got sick. After twenty four hours of hoping it was just a cold, Jonas rushed his infant daughter to the one place and one person whom could help: Rittenhouse Hospital and Kayla. Though he knew in his heart of hearts that he would lose his daughter as surely as he did his wife, he refused to say the words aloud. Kayla supported his delusion by promising to do everything in her power to help Milagro. In the end though, what she could do was make his daughter comfortable, holding her when Jonas couldn't, until she took her last breath in her father's arms.

Jonas, accompanied by Kayla, made yet another trip to the Ray family plot. Surrounded by his dead family, Jonas had a break down, but recovered enough to send Kayla on her way with a promise that he wouldn't do anything that would disappoint Lu. It wasn't a promise that Jonas kept. The thought of killing himself only appealed briefly, but it was a mortal sin according to the Catholic church and he hadn't turned his back on his upbringing. Instead, Jonas went home to his empty house, gathered a blanket that smelled like Lu and a baby blanket that smelled of Milagro and hugging them close, lost himself in the bottom of a bottle. Or several.

How long Jonas was like that he didn't know. The next thing he knew, he was being hauled into a cold shower and being yelled at and bullied by the petite, but forceful Kayla Thornton. After forcing him to sober up, Kayla left him with no choice but to come with her to her hometown. A few empty static air stations and news reports set on loop told Jonas exactly how empty the world had become. The quiet streets of Philadelphia drove that home. Though he was silent and withdrawn all the way to Mount Union, suddenly faced with Kayla's loss, he realized that he wasn't the only one left alone and behind: Kayla hadn't been there when her parents died, and her fiance was missing and probably dead.

Jonas snapped out of his own blue funk to help Kayla lay her mother to rest and then to do the same for the few residents of Mount Union who needed it. It was in Mount Union that Jonas realized that what he - and Kayla - needed was to get moving and find other survivors. Other people who were as lost and alone as they were. He presented it as an adventure to Kayla, who'd never seen the world beyond Philadelphia, and together they set off, joined along the way, miraculously enough by his mother's dog Aunt Millie who'd disappeared after his mother died.
