Pre-Deluge history and biography

Henry Spencer (52 yrs.) is a retired police officer from Santa Barbara, California. He served twenty years on the force as a uniformed officer and was well regarded by his peers. He married and had one child, a son named Shawn, whom he had hoped would follow in his (and Henry's own father's) footsteps and become a cop.

Henry's marriage broke up when his son was a teenager and Shawn sided with his mother in the divorce(as much as a thing like that has sides) and then chose to have 57 different jobs over about ten years instead of becoming a cop. Finally, Henry's son settled into a life as a con-man, pretending to be a psychic for the police. Henry was greatly disappointed.

It was several years until Henry was able to begin to reconnect with Shawn, but that was interrupted by the wave (Henry moved to Miami for a while during the estrangement, but recently moved back). He has not yet remarried and was unattached at the time of the wave.

Henry likes rules- there is a right way and a wrong way to do things and he sees no point in doing anything unless it's done the right way. This trait was probably a contributing factor in his divorce and it certainly didn't help his relationship with his son.

He's skilled at everything a police officer should be skilled at- a crack shot, smart, good at judging people's motivations and if they are lying, he also knows how to sail and used to fish for sport. He's a poker player.

His bad traits include stoicism to the point of ridiculousness and a rather gruff manner. He got so used to having people jump when he talked when he was a cop, that he takes it for granted that people still will, and that they won't voice resentments at how he talks to them.

He isn't violent needlessly, but can handle defending himself and others if the need arises.

Post-Deluge events

When the wave came, Henry was alone just sitting at his kitchen table doing a crossword puzzle. He suddenly found himself in another place- a small town in Minnesota. Of course, his first response to the emergency was to try and help as many of the people around him as he could, eventually making contact with a few police officers, firefighters and soldiers who'd lived and helping to form a makeshift security force.

As things went from bad to worse with the plague, Henry did what he could to protect the few people he could, but watching everyone around him die and never having any sign that his son or anyone he cared about had lived made him (like everyone else who'd seen what he had) wish he'd died in a flash like the others.

During the plague, when there were few doctors to be found and not much that could be done to help the dying anyway, Henry spent long hours using the first responder medical training he'd gotten on the job and more hours pouring over any medical books he could find trying to be a medic to those around him. Most of that work was fruitless, but the alternative of giving up went against Henry's nature.

As the plague ended, he tried to help reorganize things like food and water supplies. He kept busy partly because there was so much to be done and partly because stopping before he was completely exhausted tended to allow him to think and remember, which inevitably led to wishing he'd died in the wave, which was just a waste of time better spent helping rebuild.

Mostly, right now, he wants to wake up from all this like it was a bad dream and find that the biggest problem he has is that his smart-ass son wants him to help out with an investigation into a string of robberies that he's pretending to solve with the help of a ghost (because screwy stuff like that was always involved in Shawn's psychic cons).
