Pre-Deluge history and biography
Brian Kinney was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. His father, Jack, could only be classified as blue collar. He worked hard to give his family everything they had. He was also an abusive drunk, taking his anger at his life out on his son. Brian’s mother, Joan, was overly Catholic, spending more time at church than at home. When she was at home, she was drunk most of the time and always pretended Jack never hit Brian. To the public, they were the perfect, happy family. Brian’s older sister Claire hated him for no apparent reason. When Brian was in his early teens he learned that the only reason he was even born was because abortion is a sin according to Catholicism.
He attended a Catholic private school until sixth grade when he was expelled and then sent to public school. It was then that he met the boy that would become his life long best friend Michael Novotny. Though Michael was a bit of a dork, and needed help in school, he and Brian became fast friends. Michael’s mother Debbie was wary of Brian at first. She didn’t like the fact that Michael had a crush on Brian. Her attitude toward Brian softened considerably when she first learned of his home life.
Brian was a very intelligent young man. He earned a soccer scholarship to Carnegie Mellon where he got a degree in marketing. Soon he became the best ad exec at Ryder Agency. Shortly before he was made partner, which was promised to him, Marty Ryder sold the company to Gardner Vance. Brian managed to land the one account that Vance never could and in doing so, assured himself a partnership in Vanguard. It wasn’t long, however, until Brian was fired for going against a client. The client happened to be one of the candidates for Mayor of Pittsburgh. Jim Stockwell was a homophobe and a fascist and Brian couldn’t let him become Mayor of Pittsburgh so he helped with an anti-Stockwell campaign. Because this was brought to Vance’s attention, Gardner had no choice but to fire Brian. Shortly after that, Brian managed to come up with the funds to start his own advertising agency, Kinnetik, which soon became the best agency in the tri state area.
Shortly before Brian’s 30th birthday he met a young man named Justin Taylor. Brian wasn’t very successful in his love life by normal standards. He was, for lack of a better word, a man whore. He’d sleep with a different man every night, sometimes more than one, and he would never sleep with the same man twice. That was, until Justin Taylor. There was something about the young man that drew Brian to him. Maybe it was the gorgeous blonde hair, or the amazing bubble butt, or even his personality. Of course, the fact that Justin was 17 and Brian was convinced that he’d stay young forever might have had something to do with it as well. Brian did everything he could to convince Justin that he was just a fuck. That he wasn’t in love. That was until the night of Justin’s senior prom. Brian showed up, though he’d told Justin he wouldn’t, and they shared an amazing dance which would have turned into an amazing evening if it weren’t for Justin getting his head bashed in with a baseball bat by one of his homophobic classmates.
Witnessing the young man he’d finally come to realize he really did love get his head bashed in destroyed Brian. He cut himself off emotionally even further than he already was. It took a long time for him to allow his feelings to be open again, only to have his heart ripped out when Justin left him for a younger man. And this was just the beginning. Of the six years from the time Brian and Justin met until the time of the Deluge, they had a lot of ups and downs. They were even going to get married at one point, only to call it off so Justin could go to New York and follow his art career. Brian stayed in Pittsburgh and Kinnetik got even more successful.
Brian was at work at the time of the Deluge. He spent a lot of time at work since Justin left for New York. He wasn’t sure exactly what happened but one minute he was sitting at his desk, the next he was in the middle of Liberty Avenue. He felt fortunate that he was still in Pittsburgh since he gathered from some of the people around him that others had been transported to other states and even other countries. Brian helped those that he could, but it was hard. After regaining his bearings and helping some of the people around him, Brian went in search of those he loved. He managed to find Michael and Ben in the comic shop, looking very confused. Brian tried his cell phone to call Justin and got no answer. He knew that Justin often forgot to take his cell with him so it was possible he was okay but just away from his phone. There was a chance that he’d be able to find Justin and Gus.
Post-Deluge events
Brian’s hope waned at the first signs of the plague. He watched Michael get sick and die. And yet Ben stayed healthy at first. It wasn’t long before he got sick as well, though. One by one Brian watched the people around him fall ill and die a few days later. He seemed completely immune, though. He wondered if his immunity to the plague was connected to his seeming inability to contract HIV. Considering the fact that the number of tricks he had must have been in the quadruple digits. He cared for those he could, but when Michael died, he lost it. He drove out to the house in West Virginia and refused to leave. Fortunately he’d had enough food stocked already to last him a month or so.
Staying at the house didn’t last long, though. Brian was definitely one for wanting company. He’d been alone in the house all of a week when he started traveling. He was originally going to take the ‘vette but he realized that he wouldn’t be able to carry very much so he made his way back into Pittsburgh and “borrowed” a black Jeep Wrangler hard top, the car he used to drive, before going back to the house to stock up on clothes and food and other things he’d need. He would not be caught dead, even under the circumstances, without his Armani, Prada, Gucci, D&G, and any other designer clothing he could pack. Brian was a label queen to the end.
