Pre-Deluge history and biography
Ami Jackson (age 30) knew from a very early age that she was "different." She had a way of "knowing" things or "having feelings" about things that was very unsettling and off-putting to those around her, especially her overprotective mother who desired only to have a normal, bright daughter. As a child, her mother often ignored Ami's warnings and comments, and apologized to strangers for her daughter's odd behavior and unpredictable vocalizations. Ami grew older and learned to bite her tongue; but she also learned that these very things that her mother was ashamed of were those things that set her apart from her peers. Because of this books became Ami's friends.
Her parents divorced when she was eleven, and her father's work took him first to Germany, then Italy, then Egypt, Australia and finally New York city where Ami lost track of him as his cards and letters became scarcer and scarcer until none came at all. Only her deep intuition told her that he was still alive and out there somewhere. Ami's world became her books and her mother – until shortly before her fourteenth birthday.
During what was to be a "fun" (and Ami really thought her mother was stretching it with that description) holiday to her Aunt Liz's home in the countryside, Ami's mother came down with an acute case of appendicitis. While visiting her mother in the hospital, Ami met two of the people who were to become some of her dearest and closest friends – Adam Newman and Megabyte Damon. And when she met them, she found exactly what was so different about her.
Ami is a Tomorrow Person, the next stage in human evolution. Tomorrow People possess strong psionic abilities, the most notably of which are teleportation, telepathy and telekinesis. The trade off for these abilities is that Tomorrow People cannot kill. She is one of a handful of individuals like this on earth. When Ami met Adam and Megabyte, her fellow Tomorrow People she knew she had found her place.
An archeaologist, Ami was exploring ruins in the rainforest of Brazil when the Deluge came. After shaking off the tingling sensation that rippled nearly painfully through her body, Ami realized the horror of what had happened. Her entire expedition, including their guide, save her mentor and colleague had all been erased.
Post-Deluge events
In the days that followed, Ami broke the sacred rule of self-preservation that she and her fellow Tomorrow People upheld for so long: not revealing themselves or their abilities. She teleported herself and her mentor out of the jungle to the nearest populated city. They fled back to the rural villages and farms as anarchy broke out and rumors of a disease spreading through the States reached them.
Eventually, it found them, or rather it found Dr. Jones, even in a rural village.
Like several others of the Tomorrow People, at least those that weren't killed in the initial Deluge as it has come to be known, Ami Jackson discovered she was immune to Fate's Handmaiden. She brought Dr. Jones back to London and there Ami tended to her mother, and then her grandmother, burying them both in the space of a few days.
In a world absent of life and people, Ami no longer felt the need to hide her abilities. Teleportation has allowed her to explore various corners of the world unhindered and her telepathic connection to those few Tomorrow People left gives her the closest thing to long-distance "radio" contact.
Character trivia and knowledge
Ami's nature
Ami's driven to find other survivors, those who want or need to be helped. It isn't easy; the world is a silent place for someone who was accustomed to a background buzz of voices and emotions constantly. It makes sleeping difficult, and Ami has taken to downing sleeping pills and a glass of wine to get to sleep at night. The drugs and alcohol provide an added bonus: she doesn't feel and hear the things that lurk in the world that remains, dark and malevolent and alien things that slip into her head and her dreams when she sleeps.
Ami is British and speaks with what many Americans identify as a more middle-class English accent. Her Jamaican and West Indian heritage through her paternal side and her numerous American friends and contacts (before the wave and Fate's Handmaiden) have enabled her to do very good facisimiles of Jamaican and Midwestern American accents as well, although unless the situation warrants otherwise, she will typically speak in her native accent. When she's not teleporting around the world in search of survivors and a safe place to settle, Ami rides around on a Ducati ST3 that she "liberated" in the final dying days of Fate's Handmaiden. It replaces her Honda ST1300 (that earned her the affectionate title from one of her best friends, "Brit Black Bitch on a Bike"), that was "liberated" from her possession in London when she was on one of her teleporting sojourns.
Knowledge of other characters
- Victor Kruger can fly. Ami also knows his true age and that his youthful appearance is courtesy of The Deluge.
- Michelle Webster is far more experienced/acquainted with death and killing than she appears. She's not a homicidal lunatic, but there's more to Michelle than meets the eye. Ami has assumed (rightly so) that Michelle is older than she appears and is hiding a few secrets, but she isn't going to pry.
Romantic Relationships (If Applicable)
Ami has entered into a rather sudden and intense relationship with Victor. It appears to be very serious.
Future plans and Goals
Having found a handful of survivors and "settled" in a place for a while, Ami is primarily concerned with trying to find some semblance of normal in life now. She knows that there are things to be done: bodies moved and buried, the town inventoried, and now that there are more people, she'll throw out the suggestion but she's hoping she won't have to be the ringleader.
Additionally, another of Ami's more immediate goals is finding out whether or not she's pregnant.
