Grade 11 English (ENG3U): Persuasive Speaking (November 2006)
Topics will be based on some aspect of the UN Millennium Development Goals:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global parternship for development
There is a variety of narrower topics one can develop from any of these goals. Whatever the topic, the need for the information to be current is important, and the need for evidence to support your position is critical.
It is important that you use facts from trustworthy sources that are considered acceptable. When looking for information of this kind it is still wise to rely on mainstream media sources such as newspapers, magazines, and academic journals, whether in print or online, rather than wikipedia or blogs. The school subscribes to many legitimate publications electronically and most of them are available through the Proquest or SIRS databases accessible through the Article Databases page of the library web site.
There are many organizations that post information about international development on the web. Refer to the section of the library page on Evaluating Information Found on the Internet.
