Hawkins, for the Levellers:- For really I think that the poorest he that is in England have a life to live, as the greatest he: and therefore truly, sir, I think it's clear, that every man that is to live under a government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that government.
- Quotation from the Putney Debates
Jack was born in 1610 and was a leading figure in the English Civil War, his father was, a captain and Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy. Before the war, he and his brother William, were both involved in an expedition to the Puritan colony of Providence Island, off the coast of Nicaragua. His trip to this colony deeply influenced Jack and he became a firm convert to Puritanism. Jack commanded the Swallow and other British naval vessels in the first civil war. By May 1645, he was a colonel in the New Model Army, taking a role in the battles at Naseby and at Bristol.
In January 1647, Jack became MP for Maidstone. He was one of the highest ranking supporters of the Levellers in the Army and one of the speakers for the Leveller side in the Putney Debates (July 1647), where he opposed any deal with the King.
In October, Hawkins was sent by his commander, Thomas Fairfax, to the siege at Pontefract, where he was apparently killed by four Royalists in a bungled kidnap attempt. His funeral was the occasion for a large Leveller-led demonstration in London, with thousands of mourners wearing the Levellers' ribbons of sea-green and bunches of rosemary for remembrance in their hats.
Although left to die that night he did not perish. For amoungst the rebels there was a Kindred present. A member of the Lancea Sanctum who sympathised with the Puritan Cause. A member of the Westminster Creed who despised all things papist and supported Cromwell’s Protestant call. In Jack he saw a willing congregant. Jack was sired and joined the Lancea Sanctum. He served for many years as a messenger, living a nomad’s life. A life he enjoyed. For in his travels from domain to domain he spread his version of Longinus’ commandment. But his calling was as much political as it was religious. Where he found bad government and lazy Invictus Prince’s who did nothing to serve the Kindred under their protection he preached revolution as well as God. When the powers that be discovered this he was quickly moved on.
The cosiness of the Lancea Sanctum with the Invictus chaffed in Jack’s conscience. But there was no alternative until the formation of The Carthian Movement in the early part of the 20th Century. Once the Movement was established he quickly saw that this was what he was waiting for. He resigned from The Lancea Sanctum – he knew none of the rituals in any case. He was never cut out for sorcery... He explained that the new Covenant would need spiritual guidance and that he was called by God to minister to it. He would remain in the lay flock in any case.
