From Reddit Choose Your Own Adventure

Revision as of 17:49, 14 February 2011 by ImHumble (Talk | contribs)

2/09/11 :: I've fleshed out the elevator thread, there is one fatal ending, one return to the start room, and one successful descent. The elevator is destroyed and should not be used to ascend, the shaft however may be used if someone wishes to in the future.

The room at the bottom has three exits, one Labyrinth, one Laboratory, and one dark staircase descent. I have no definite intentions for the Labyrinth or Laboratory (the torch on the wall next to the labyrinth entrance is meant to be taken if you contribute to the labyrinth story, as it is very dark down there) I invite all to contribute to those.

I only have a rough intention for the dark staircase descent as a true dungeon of sorts. Nothing more definite than that, feel free to contribute.

I have also added a couple of unique return to start room pages for staircase and elevator.

Awesome contribution! Hopefully we can get more participation. Feel free to spread the news on Reddit!

2/10/11 :: I've edited the "Try and get the box open" page to "Try to get the box open" I just copy and pasted a new page, didn't see the move function. I will be using that one next if needed.

Also minor formatting, changed the response descriptions in "Try to get the box open" and changed the lake to tang of ocean air in "The door" to comply with what you see from the top of the lighthouse if you took that route first. There can be a lake up in the forest somewhere or beyond the meadow I'm sure with better results.

-Zitkovich

The 'move' function copies the history of the old page to the new one, and creates a redirect. It does NOT update links that point to the old page. Because of this, it does not free up the original title for another page unless you manually change all links that point to the redirect. Use with caution, or you might be better off just copy/pasting to new pages if you need the title changed.
Also, you can make the choice state something other than the actual title of the new page.

    Example:

[[Link title|What you want it to say]]
     [[open_steel_door_2|Pull the door open cautiously]]

2/10/11 :: Minor edits to the laboratory, expanded options with descriptions instead of simply "strait, left, right"

Changed the name of "Take a little more time and try to repair the box" to "Take a little more time and try to repair the control panel" to avoid confusion with the box on the floor in the elevator.

There is an issue with the wooden box in the elevator, both the thread where you fix the elevator and the thread where you go strait for the box end up at the same "open the box" page. The "turn your attention back to the box" should probably not be there after you fix the elevator, unless someone wants to work out two identical "open the box" threads; one where you had fixed the elevator and one where you need to still fix it.

2/10/11 :: I added a page for the Swirl your finger around in the liquid link found in the Try to get the box open page. The reader swirls his finger in the liquid and a trollface flies out, and his antennae start to throb.

I added options for Reach up and feel your antennae, you decide it was your imagination so you Switch your focus back to getting the elevator working (which is also linked in the elevator), and Exit the elevator and seek out the flying trollface. I hope this all works out!

2/11/11 :: I've been working on a plot line for the staircase with the basic idea that the girl/woman/creature/monster is somehow evil. I'm mostly just running with it. Feel free to edit or add to anything I've done.

Also, I'm going through and trying to streamline things a bit, and add links to pages that are currently dead ends and trolls. I'll keep doing this as I go along.

-Quixotiko

2/11/11 :: I went through all the links up to #133, and made sure they all have links, and added some writing in a couple of cases. Anyway, everything's looking pretty good.

Labyrinth

I've started doing some of The Labyrinth. The idea is a long, boring maze with a big pay-off if you can navigate it correctly. (i.e. Only one exit!) I need to go back and add some improvements (such as the ability to take a torch with you.) If other people want to edit it in this direction that would be just splendid. :)

Great idea, you beat me to it! Maybe you could even map out a grid of rooms (say, 30x30?) while you are working to keep it all consistent. Good luck!

Warning: some self-promotion here. I had a similar idea to this CYOA, but with a twist. I called it Choose Your Own HyperAdventure. The twist is that you are exploring the web while you explore the story, because each link not only takes you down the story path, but it takes you to the blog (or whatever site) of the person that wrote the choice. Instead of the story being contained in the zoo, it is a wild animal roaming across the web. I won't link to my attempt at this--which failed due to lack of critical mass--but it's the top result on google if you're curious. Apologies if this was not the appropriate place to discuss this.

-Schissel

In the future, those sorts of discussions should probably be contained in the Reddit Thread. Which brings another fair point; I should start a subreddit. Also, new additions to the Talk page go at the bottom.

Location Presence

All contributors doing underground work like the labyrinth and everything after the elevator, be aware that your start point is in a lighthouse at the top of a cliff with the ocean to the east. When you are mapping underground, remember that if you head too far east, you will hit the cliff face and if you go too far underground, you will hit water.

I've added to the 'meadow then river' storyline I don't really have time to continue right now, but will later if someone else doesn't. I was thinking if the choose walk upstream option have then come to a bridge with a troll and a riddle and if they choose not to try and cross the bridge the eventually come to a small town? --NRS5813 --9:10ET 11 feburary 2011

I added to the going down the gate from the meadow and running back to the meadow from there. Im in school but I'll try to do as much as I can from here.

Images?

I'm really having a lot of fun reading this, and I love the idea of interactive story telling. And while I do feel that I may have something to contribute literature wise, I also feel that some concept/fan art could really help generate intrest and excitement. What do you think?

--ImHumble 2/11/11

Adding images is a fantastic idea. I say, if you can do it, go for it. Quixotiko 2/11/11

Unfortunately, this is hosted on a free wiki. Naturally, uploads are disabled, as well as customizing any of the code. Server uptime and speed is at the whim of the generous people who who host editthis.info as well. I'm definitely open to other ideas if there is a better place to migrate.

--Admin 14:48, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

There are far too many threads now for this host to handle, it's hell getting anywhere fast and if this gets any larger, they are going to boot us.

--Zitkovich 11 February 2011

Actually, this host is home to thousands of wikis much larger than us. I don't think we are slowing it down; it is just slow in general.

Check out this list of wikis hosted at http://www.editthis.info

We haven't even crossed the top 1000 wikis in terms of size, articles, edits or traffic.

This is the wiki I modeled ours on; it is hosted here too. It has tens of thousands of more articles than we do.

--Admin 18:27, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

I stand corrected, so this wiki is just slow as hell normally? We definitely need to find a better host. Load times ruin the flow of the adventure.

--Zitkovich 11 February 2011

It has been running slightly faster lately, and the contributions are amazing, some absurd story lines though, to be expected from reddit. Keep up the good work guys!

Images Re-Visited

I am unable to give up the idea of concept art for this project, and was thinking that if we were able to host the images on a different site, like the popular imgur, then we could just provide a link for the reader to click on. What do you think? And how should we display such links?
