Tin

From Reach

A Tin is a slang term for a 1/2 gallon cannister of Carbon 122. A tin is a standardized cylinder 5 inches tall and 12 inches in diameter, with connections on both the top and the bottom allowing flow of the fuel inside. They are designed to be stackable, and when stacked the cannisters effectively combine into one large tank due to the design of the ports. As such, most vehicles are designed to carry a number of tins stacked on top of each other as the primary fuel reserve.

Due to the design, the top of the stack is the cannister that empties first. This leads to the term "Top Tinning", which means to sell a tin that is not completely full, or more generally misrepresenting the value of an item.

The necessity of Carbon 122 leads tins to be a common barter object. While it is not the sole source of money, it is as widely accepted as any of the other standard commodities.
