Statement on the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS) No 3 (19 March 2007)

The Deans' response to the Review of the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) recruitment system is addressing the shortcomings but the mechanisms have not yet been identified. We need to ensure that candidates are ranked fairly when it comes to offering posts.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has convened a special meeting tomorrow (20 March) and Mr. Peter McDonnell will be representing our College.

I welcome the many emails from consultants and trainees which continue to arrive. Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

The Secretary of State is not withdrawing the process so we continue to push for the improvements necessary to make it fair and effective so that the best doctors are identified to be ophthalmologists to treat the patients of the future.
