Junior doctors raise funds to challenge MMC system

JUNIOR doctors protesting against a new recruitment system are collecting funds to launch a legal challenge if the government refuses to address their concerns. Remedy UK, a campaign group formed to highlight doctors' fears about the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) programme, said donors had already given £20,000 to their legal fund. Dr Julia McGill, an anaesthetist at Edinburgh's Western General Hospital, said they were exploring the use of employment laws, public laws or even human rights laws to have the recruitment system halted.

Doctors have called the online application process "shambolic", leaving many highly skilled juniors without even an interview for posts due to start in August. It is estimated that more than 30,000 doctors have applied for 22,000 specialist training jobs. Those not successful can take non-training posts, or go abroad to continue their training to become consultants.

Thousands of doctors and their families protested in London and Glasgow at the weekend over the programme.
