C.O. Wilson Dies, Funeral is Friday

'Springfield Mayor Passes Away Wednesday Morning Following Operation. Councilmen To Attend Funeral; Stores Are to Close For Services'

Charles O. Wilson, Mayor of Springfield, died at the Pacific Christian hospital in Eugene Wednesday morning at about 4:00 o'clock following a major operation which he underwent early Monday morning. Mayor Wilson became ill Saturday evening and was taken to the hospital. He was very ill for two days following the operation, but rallied on Tuesday afternoon. Later in the evening he took a sudden turn for the worse and died the next morning.

Funeral Friday at 11:00

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning from the Veatch funeral home in Eugene at eleven o'clock. The body will be taken to Salem and interment will be made in Bellcrest Memorial Park at Salem that afternoon. Rev. A.H. Saunders, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Eugene, will officiate.

Mr. Wilson was born on his father's donation farm, which is now in the east suburb of Salem, on October 1, 1871. He reached his 58th birthday on Tuesday.

Mrs. Gertrude Riddell Wilson, his wife, to whom he was married in 1901, survives him. He also leaves four sons, a grandson and a granddaughter. The sons are Charles Kenneth Wilson of Salem, sales manager for the Buick automobile agency in that city; Clifford Otto Wilson of Springfield, who was in business with his father here; John Hobart Wilson, Springfield, a sophomore at the University of Oregon; and Donald Riddell Wilson, a student at the University high school.

The two grandchildren are Clifford McLean Wilson, small son of Clifford Otto Wilson of Springfield, and Patricia, the infant daughter of Charles Kenneth Wilson of Salem. Otto J. Wilson, a brother residing at Salem, also survives.

Mr. Wilson is a native Oregonian. His father, J.H. Wilson, crossed the plains to California with an ox team during the gold rush of 1849. He came to Oregon in 1851. His mother was Miss. Minerva Melson. She crossed the plains in 1857. They were married in Salem in 1866.

The call for volunteers during the Spanish American war was answered by Mr. Wilson, and he joined the second Oregon company K. He has been very prominent in the affairs of the Spanish American War Veterans and has attended many conventions of that organization.

The deceased mayor was a mayor of the Central Presbyterian church of Eugene and of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks at Salem.

Mr. Wilson moved to Eugene six years ago from Salem and came to this city the following year when the family toop up their residents on Emerald Heights, and he established and became manager of the Carbolinium Wood Preserving plant.

He was elected mayor of Springfield at the last election and took over his office in January. He had served only nine months of his term of four years when he died.

W.P. Tyson, chairman of the city council is acting mayor pending the appointment of one by the council. The regular meeting of the council is to be held on October 14 and it is not decided whether a special meeting will be held before that time.

A proclamation has been issued by Mr. Tyson asking all business houses in Springfield to close between the hours of eleven a.m. and twelve noon in respect to the late mayor. Several merchants have signified their intentions of closing.

The city council is expected to attend the funeral in a body.
