  • In 1871, the Oregon and California Railroad bypassed Springfield in favor of Eugene after a group of Eugene businessmen paid railroad financier Ben Holladay $48,000 to reroute the line. While Eugene prospered, the city of Springfield stagnated without direct access to this important transportation resource (Graham 1978b:2-3).
  • The first church to be erected in Springfield was First Baptist Church, dedicated in 1871 (Walling 1883:453).
  • The village of Springfield boats three churches, none of the histories of which, although promised, have we received. The first to be erected was that of the Baptist denomination, which was dedicated November 26, 1871, the building having cost sixteen hundred dollars, Rev. J.C. Richardson being pastor.
