Battles of Yavin 4
During the Grand Marshal continuity, there are at least two battles on the surface of Yavin 4 itself.
Second Battle of Yavin
Location | Yavin 4, Yavin Temple |
Date | 6.25 ABY |
Combatants | |
Grand Marshal's Fleet | New Republic |
Commmanders | |
Grand Marshal |
|
Outcome | |
Rebel victory: Destruction of most of the Grand Marshal's forces
Era | |
New Republic era |
The first of these was documented in Grand Marshal Trilogy: The Remnant Threat, after a futile attempt to destroy the moon by the Grand Marshal.
This followed the rescue of Luke Skywalker by Leia Organa and Han Solo from the Third Death Star, the subsequent capture of the fully armed but not yet operational battlestation by Rebel Alliance forces, and the expulsion of Imperial forces from there.
The vengeful Marshal ordered all Imperial escape craft to invade Yavin 4, and to destry as much of the ancient temple there. This, he said, would leave a mark on the New Republic that could never be washed off. The trip between the Death Star and Yavin 4 was quickly made by Lambda-class shuttles, among other transports.
The first Imperial charge, assisted with AT-RTs among other light support, was incredibly sucessful, destroying several New Republic lines of defence. However, this supposed Alliance 'weakness' was merely a ploy to trap Imperial forces inside an ancient hut prieviously inhabited by the Gree.
Once the Imperials ran into the solid stone hut, they found themselves surrounded by Rebels. Among these were several Force-sensitives that Luke had recently recruited as the elite force of the New Republic. Needless to say, there was a massive massacre of Imperial troops.
The Grand Marshal attempted to escape in an Imperial shuttle, but was dispatched by Han, Leia, and Luke. This corpse, however, was discovered by Han and Leia to be a double. They did not reveal this to Luke, for unknown reasons.
Third Battle of Yavin
Location | Yavin 4, Yavin Temple |
Date | 6.75 ABY |
Combatants | |
Grand Marshal's Fleet | New Republic |
Commmanders | |
Grand Marshal |
|
Outcome | |
Imperial victory: Death of several Jedi and domination on planet assured
Era | |
New Republic era |
This battle was one of the final steps in another insidious plot by Aden'la Darasuum, the Grand Marshal, to destroy the fledgling New Republic, and is documented in Grand Marshal Trilogy: Wrath of the Marshal.
After grievously wounding Luke Skywalker in Anchorhead and distracting him from the invasion there and on Naboo, he personally accompanied his fleet to Yavin 4, knowing that the fight on Hoth would be won, even without his presence there.
The strategy was first to constantly orbit the planet with Imperial ships, in order to prevent Rebels from escaping, and also to strategically bomb locations that were found difficult to pass. Before long, Imperial troops started pouring from the destroyers and frigates to mass near the Rebel base to assemble and prepare for a massive attack.
Through a series of feints, the Rebels were thrown into confusion, and were utterly unable to withstand the final push of Imperials through the heavy oaken doors of the Jedi Artifact Archives/Temple. The Grand Marshal's two Dark Jedi apprentices finished off many of the Force-sensitives protecting the Rebels attempting to flee to the opposite side of the planet.
Stormtroopers were able to retrieve the skeleton of Darth Opacus, an artifact the Grand Marshal would eventually use in an arcane ritual. Darasuum proceeded to attack the last members of the newly-formed Jedi Order, including Deuv Thw'ro and Yarn Sarka.
Most of the ruling Alliance members survived, but Deuv was forced to watch as Yarn was killed by Stormtrooper Commander SC-1618. He would escape with her body to the Millenium Falcon, and promise revenge on the Grand Marshal.
The Third Battle of Yavin was a massive Imperial victory, with few prisoners taken; almost all Rebel troops that had died, were killed in combat. Those that were taken prisoner were forced to the same fate as those taken on Hoth, or on the Death Star: public execution during the Grand Marshal's declaration of himself as Galactic Emperor (in opposition to the "Empress", Ysanne Isard.)
Battle over Yavin
Location | Space around Yavin |
Date | 6.25 ABY |
Combatants | |
Fleet of the Grand Marshal | New Republic Fleet |
Commmanders | |
Grand Marshal | Han Solo |
Outcome | |
Rebel victory: Capture of Death Star III; major Imperial starfighter losses
Era | |
New Republic era |
The Battle over Yavin was the Rebel's undermining of the Grand Marshal's first plot to destroy the New Republic by blowing its main administration to electrons using a newly-constructed Death Star. Luke Skywalker's mission to depower the Death Star and send it careening off to some other moon was stopped by a mysterious Imperial Red Guard who later disappeared.
The Grand Marshal placed him in Prison Sector HX - T, and spoke briefly with him before moving on, not revealing his true identity. Luke had not been properly searched, and he activated the emergency beacon on his belt. The instant the signal was received, a scramble order was given throughout Epsilon Base on Yavin 4.
Among the fleet of starfighters sent to rescue Luke were X-wings, Y-wings, A-wings, and the newly-introduced Republic Strike Fighters. They squared off against TIE Assaulters and TIE Interceptors as they blew a hole in the Starfighter fleet for the Millenium Falcon, crew including Han Solo, Leia Organa and Chewbacca, to rescue Luke.
Rebel transports followed them, and quickly overran the under-prepared Imperial crew of the Death Star. Jedi Generals were responsible for most of the carnage leading up to the capture of the space station. In closing, while the Battle over Yavin was a massive Rebel victory, it was not the end of the conflict yet, as can be seen above.
Second Battle over Yavin
Location | Space around Yavin |
Date | 6.25 ABY |
Combatants | |
Fleet of the Grand Marshal | New Republic Fleet |
Commmanders | |
Grand Marshal | General Rogor |
Outcome | |
Imperial victory: Detonation of the Death Star, desturction of a significant proportion of the Yavin fleet
Era | |
New Republic era |
The Second Battle over Yavin occured at approximately the same time or slightly before the Third Battle of Yavin <see above>. A fleet several of squadrons large jumped out of hyperspace just in front of Yavin. Ships that participated include:
- The Vindicator-class Star Dreadnought Darasuum
- The Destroyer-class Star Battlecruiser Iphicles
- Imperial I-class Star Destroyers
- Calais
- Euphemus
- Orpheus
- Zetes
- Imperial II-class Star Destroyers
- Melas
- Oileus
- Many others
Against such an unstoppable force, the Rebels had very little chance of survive. Nevertheless, they put up a brave fight, and field tested the Republic Strike Fighter Mark II in the battle. Several new attack vehicles were also unveiled by the Marshal's Empire, namely R-52 Baza Snubfighters, and the TIE Assaulter.
The primary battle plan of the Grand Marshal was merely to clear enough space for the Star Destroyers to "close in" and unleash Lambda and Sentinel Shuttles, along with Y-85 Titan Dropships in order to attack the Rebel Base on Yavin 4.
He also counted on one thing: The Rebels would get desperate. This was to be proven correct when the Death Star III was aimed and ready to fire upon the Marshal's command ship Darasuum. However, the Death Star III superlaser complement had been rigged to explode if one attempted firing the superlaser.
One quarter of the Hope Beacon (as it was called by the Republic) detonated soon after, killing most of the people manning it, including several of the Republic's top staff. Nevertheless, the icing on the cake came soon after: A TIE Interceptor, Black 5, being pursued closely by X-wings had reached the Trench of the Death Star.
The Marshal, in a modified TIE Advanced, blew the two T-65s away, and the two proton torpedoes fired by the Interceptor reached the reactor core, destroying the Death Star. Upon seeing this, most Rebel troops fighting on the surface surrendered to the forces of the Marshal, which had landed several hours earlier.
All in all, this was a massive victory for the Grand Marshal, as almost all Republic naval elements stationed on Yavin had been destroyed, and the plnet, a significant base, had been compltely overrun. This marked the beginning of the fourty-eight month reign of the Grand Marshal.
