Jackcentric:To Do List

From Jackcentric

This is the Jackcentric wiki to do list. Because this is a wiki, anyone can add things to this list, and anyone who thinks they can help can contribute to any of the goals below. No one person has specific responsibility for any given goal, so if you can help just a little bit, feel free to do so -- it doesn't obligate you to take on the whole project by yourself.

If you're going to be spending any particular time working on something, please add your name below so that people who want to help can contact you and no one ends up duplicating effort. If a particular goal is complex, feel free to create a new page to discuss what's going on with it. These new pages should be in the Jackcentric namespace under Category:About the Wiki.

[edit] Editorial Things

Right now I'm thinking we should copyleft the Help, Template, MediaWiki, and Jackcentric namespaces and leave everything else unlicensed. This needs to be done before we go public with the wiki, since we need to let people know before they contribute what might happen to their words afterwards.--Bedawyn 19:15, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
Done now. --Bedawyn 00:40, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
  • We still need a series infobox and a series navigation box.
Finished. The cosmetics may need tweaking, but that can be done over time as we can get more examples to work with.--Bedawyn 20:57, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
  • The trigger warning templates need to be finished.
Just finished. We'll probably need a few more in future, but we'll see what's needed as the stories come up. There are still some spacing issues, but I think we'll have to work those out over time; we don't have enough stories using them yet to get a broad look at what the spacing issues might be.--Bedawyn 03:06, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
  • We need to figure out guidelines for dealing with stories whose Jackcentric-ness may be debatable.

[edit] Community Things

  • We need to recruit more editors.
I'd rather not publicly promote the wiki yet, while we're still in beta, but feel free to invite specific people you know are Jack fans. I'd really like to get a few testers who aren't familiar with wikis to let us know what works and what needs to be tweaked before going public.--Bedawyn 19:33, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
  • We need a forum. Wiki discussion pages are great for talking about very specific things related to an existing page, but they're not so hot for letting people know about new developments or more general issues. A LiveJournal community would be better for that and provide a way to spread the word about the wiki at the same time.
Euphrosyne2u has the comm drafted.--Bedawyn 19:33, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
The Search function appears to be borked, or at least very nonintuitive, and I need to figure it out myself before I can explain it to others!--Bedawyn 19:33, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
  • The main page needs to be more welcoming.
  • The community portal page doesn't exist yet -- it should be the main entrance to the "About the Wiki" section, just as the "Browse stories" link is the main entrance to the fanwork index.

[edit] Cosmetic Things

Geminia905 was working on this as of 1/3. I threw up the current picture in the meantime just because I was tired of looking at the "Change This" default daisy, but it's hardly a proper logo.--Bedawyn 19:50, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
  • The infoboxes could be improved.
I'd like to keep a coat-blue for the storybox and some version of purple and brown among the other infoboxes, but I'm not attached to any of the other colors used or to specific shades. Feel free to experiment with other colors; just try to keep them websafe and clearly distinguished from the other infobox colors, and make sure the text shows up well against the background. I'm also not really happy with the double borders, and the line spacing within cells could use some work. It looks fine for most cells, but if the title is long enough to drop down to another line, spacing issues will show up. I'm also not happy with the shiptype variable. "Pairing:" looks good, but won't be accurate for all stories. "Characters:" is accurate, but is too long to look good. I've fussed with it enough though and am out of ideas to try now.--Bedawyn 19:50, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
  • We need to decide where to put the series and warning boxes.
My first instinct is to put them under the infobox, but since most pages will have very little actual text, that could start to look odd really quick.--Bedawyn 19:50, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Can we get rid of the ad on the front page? It's fine elsewhere, but looks sucky on the main page.

[edit] Techy Things

Goals on this list will require some amount of MediaWiki technical knowledge and might require admin privileges.

  • Figure out what the Search function is doing!
  • The new pages report does not currently show pages that have been moved, even though both locations are new. It's also not showing What Never Should Be. What's going on there?
It looks like it's defining "recent" as "within the past week", though most other sites I've seen define it longer. I haven't found a place yet to change the setting.--Bedawyn 16:52, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
  • The text in the Edit Page footer ("Please note that...") needs to be customized for Jackcentric.
Done now. --Bedawyn 00:42, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Can we change the yellow-bordered footer? We don't really need a privacy policy or disclaimers.
  • Can we get a custom namespace for the shared story space?
  • Can we get a better looking Create Page box (with a longer input space appropriate for story titles)? The input box extension is not currently installed.

[edit] Ongoing Cleanup

Since we're new, there's not much to do here; however, as new pages are added, there will always be little things that need to be tweaked here and there. The MediaWiki software provides some easy ways to keep an eye on general maintenance and wiki-tidying tasks that anyone can lend a hand with.

The Special pages link in the sidebar lists a number of automatically generated reports that can help you find things that need to be fixed. Most problems are easy to fix; it's usually just a matter of adding or editing a category or other link. These reports will probably be the most helpful:

But it can be ignored for now, since I haven't worked out a category structure for media files yet anyway. --Bedawyn 21:04, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Special:UncategorizedPages - There should really really be nothing on this page.
  • Special:UncategorizedTemplates - There should be nothing in this list.
  • Special:WantedCategories - These are liable to be a mistyped version of a category that already exists.
  • Special:WantedFiles - This should be empty.
  • Special:WantedPages - A few of these pages should be permanently redlinked, such as the Jack/Genghis Khan category and the "How To Add Listings" page in the main namespace, since they're being used as tutorial examples of redlinks. But most of these are either pages that someone should get around to writing or mistyped/mislinked versions of pages that already exist.

Jackcentric also has a few Cleanup categories, created by the fanwork templates when someone creates a new listing. If there are any real (non-example) pages in any of these categories, please take a moment to edit the page and replace the example category with a real one.
