Help:How To Add Listings
From Jackcentric
Since this is a wiki, anyone can add their own works or works by other people -- you don't have to wait for anyone to upload or archive anything. It will help if you're already familiar with wiki editing, but it's still pretty easy even if you're not.
Step 1: Make sure the story (or other fanwork) actually belongs in the Jackcentric directory. It's not enough for Jack to just be in the story; he has to be either the most important character or of equal importance with no more than two other characters. It doesn't need to be from his perspective, but his needs, his motives, his decisions should be among the driving forces of the story.
Step 2: Make sure you know the exact, accurate title of the story. Don't use the chapter title of a multichapter story or the series title if it's part of a series. On LiveJournal and similar sites, authors sometimes title their post with something informal that isn't the actual title of the story. So make sure your eye is on the actual, real story title.
Step 3: Pick the appropriate template link below and open it in a new tab or window:
New Stories | New Art | New Vids | New Meta | New Whatever Else |
Step 4: Create a new page by plopping the title of the story or other fanwork into the Create A Page box at the bottom of this page. Use title case (all words capitalized except short prepositions and articles that aren't the first word of the title: Name of the Story, not Name Of The Story and not Name of the story). Spell out any ampersands, but other punctuation is fine.
If a page with that name already exists, it will take you to that page's edit field. If it's the same story you were thinking of, you can edit the details if you want or leave it as it is; either way you're good to go. If it's a different story with the same title but a different author, go to the very bottom of the edit field and add the code [[Category:NeedsDisambig]], then save the page. Then go back to the Create A Page button and start over, but this time name your new page Name of the Story (Authorname).
Step 5: Once you've got a fresh blank page with the same title as the story, jump over to the template page you opened earlier. Each template page contains a lightly shaded box with a dashed border. Select and copy all the text in this box. Be sure not to lose the opening or closing brackets!
Step 6: Paste the copied code into the edit field of your new empty page. Then edit the code to fill in the details. Most of the information should be pretty self-explanatory, but the template pages should contain explanations for anything that might be ambiguous. You can also check this page to find out how to format links prettily.
Step 7: Add categories. Categories will appear at the bottom of the edit field, and some of the standard ones should be there already, ready for you to replace the fill-in fields (such as EnterRatingHere) with actual details. Be careful not to lose any of the brackets and not to add spaces between the "Category:" text and the category name.
Once you've got the copied-and-pasted categories edited, you can go ahead and add any other categories or keywords you think the story should have. Use the [[Category:Whatever]] format, where "Whatever" is the category or keyword you think is relevant. [[Category:Jack/Estelle]] will put it into the Jack/Estelle category, for instance; [[Category:Character Study]] will put it into the Character Study category; [[Category:Drabbles]] will put it into the Drabbles category. You can browse the list of existing categories here or here, or you can simply make up your own.
Step 8: When you edit a page, you'll see a "Summary:" box at the bottom of the page. Usually, this box is for describing what changes you made to an already existing page. However, if you're creating a new fanwork page, you can use it to describe the new listing and say something like "New Story: blah blah blah by Whoever" -- something that will appeal to people looking at the New Stories page. So fill in your edit summary, click preview to check for errors, then save the page.
Step 9: Once you're done with the new listing, go back and look for red links on the page. If you assigned the story to a category that doesn't exist yet, it will appear as a red link. Click the link, and you'll be taken to a new page for your new category. Add one of the existing categories to make your new category a subcategory of the existing one. For instance, if you assigned the story to [[Category:Jack/Genghis Khan]], then you'd want to make the new Jack/Genghis Khan category a subcategory of [[Category:Slash]]. Author name redlinks should always become subcategories under [[Category:Authors]], and artists and vidders under their corresponding category. If your new category doesn't clearly fit under any of the existing main categories, put it in [[Category:Keywords]] instead.
And you're done! Thanks for helping to expand our database.
Remember to use the exact title as the new page name (but spell out "and" instead of "&"). |
